How Does Your Team Compare To Last Season Part 3 | Opta Stats Comparison

This Opta Stats comparison looks at how well the teams at the bottom of the table have compared to last season. It includes Aston Villa, Wigan, Bolton,Blackburn and Wolves.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa have conceded 0.16 fewer goals this season and kept 2 more clean sheets. They have also improved their crossing accuracy by 2% but their passing accuracy is 1.28% worse off than last season.

It has also taken Aston Villa an extra 0.68 minutes to create a chance this season and they have scored 12 fewer goals at a rate of a goal every 95 minutes, which is 20 minutes longer than last season.

Villa have also only converted 11% of their chances, which is 2% less than last season. They have had 59 fewer shots and had 33 fewer shots on target. It has also taken them a minute longer this season to have a shot.

The amount of clear-cut chances that Villa have created this season is also down on last season, as they have created 46 clear-cut chances this season compared to the 59 that they created last season. It has also taken them and extra 15 minutes to create a clear-cut chance this season.

However, Villa have converted 10% more of the clear-cut chances that they have created this season as well as having made 4% more passes in the attacking half of the pitch and 12% more passes in the final third of the pitch.

The fact that Villa have created fewer clear-cut chances this season is not surprising as they lost both Downing and Young at the start of the season. This was a big loss seeing though Downing and Young created 37 out of the 59 clear-cut chances that Villa created last season.

So, if Villa want to improve next season they may need to dip into the transfer market for an attacking midfielder to create the chances that Bent and the other strikers rely on to score goals.

Wigan

Wigan’s statistics this season are very similar to their statistics from last season, which goes to show that they have not improved by very much this season.

Wigan have conceded 0.01 more goals per game this season and kept one more clean sheet. They have also found a teammate with 2% more of their crosses this season and improved their passing accuracy by 4.52%.

It has taken Wigan an extra 0.02 minutes to create a chance, while they have scored one less goal. However, it has taken them 90 minutes to score a goal in both seasons and they have converted 11% of their chances in both seasons.

They have had one less shot this season, but it has taken them 10 minutes to have a shot in both seasons. They have also had 15 fewer shots on target.

The main area where Wigan fall short this season is creating and converting clear-cut chances, as they have created 9 less clear-cut chances this season and converted 4% less of them. It has also taken them and extra 33 minutes to create a clear-cut chance.

Wigan have also made 1% fewer passes in the attacking half of the pitch but made 5% more passes in the final third.

Therefore, although Wigan’s statistics haven’t changed much from last season the one area that they do need to improve on is creating more clear-cut chances.

Bolton

Bolton have conceded more than 2 goals per game this season which 0.56 more goals per game than last season. They have also kept 2 less clean sheets.

Bolton’s passing accuracy has improved by 4.36% this season but their crossing accuracy has dropped by 5%. It has also taken them an extra 1.10 minutes to create a chance this season.

It has taken them 79 minutes to score a goal this season, which is 10 minutes more than last season. They have also scored 8 fewer goals this season, but have converted 1% more of their chances.

Bolton have had 89 fewer shots this season and 14 fewer shots on target. It has also taken them an extra 2 minutes to have a shot.

They have also created 13 fewer clear-cut chances but converted 13% more of them. They have also made 5% fewer passes in the attacking half of the pitch but made 6% more passes in the final third.

So, if Bolton do stay in the Premier League next season then they will need to work on their crossing as they have been 5% less accurate this season. They also need to work on creating more clear-cut chances, as they have created 13 less of them this season.

Blackburn

Blackburn have conceded 0.5 more goals per game this season and kept 6 fewer clean sheets.

Blackburn have improved their crossing accuracy by 2% this season and their passing accuracy by 6.74%. They have also scored one more goal this season and it has taken them 0.13 fewer minutes to create a chance.

Their chance conversion has also improved by 2% this season but they have had 28 fewer shots and 4 more shots on target. They have also created 20 less clear-cut chances than last season but converted 3% more of them.

Rovers have made 7% fewer passes in the attacking half of the pitch this season but made 4% more in the final third of the pitch.

Blackburn’s defending has cost them dearly this season as they have conceded 0.5 more goals per game. This coupled with the fact that they have only scored one more goal just goes to show why Blackburn will start next season in the Championship.

Wolves

Wolves have conceded a massive 2.14 goals per game this season, which is 0.4 more goals per game than last season. They have also kept one less clean sheet.

Their passing accuracy has improved by 4.21% and their crossing accuracy has improved by 4% but their main problem has been converting their chances, as they have converted 3% fewer chances than last season. This has led to them scoring 8 fewer goals this season.

Wolves have taken 13 more shots this season with 10 more being on target. They have also created 4 fewer clear-cut chances this season and converted 3% less of them. This works out that it has taken them an extra 12 minutes to create a clear-cut chance.

They have made 5% fewer passes in the attacking half of the pitch this season but made 5% more in the final third.

It is not surprising that Wolves have been relegated this season as it has taken them 92 minutes to score a goal. This coupled with the fact that they have conceded 2.14 goals per game just goes to show what a struggle this season has been for them.
