Premier League Team of the Year 11/12 via Opta Stats | Part 2: Midfield

The defence had already been chosen for the Premier League team of the year (https://www.eplindex.com/14552/premier-league-team-of-the-year-based-on-statistics-part-1-defence-opta-stats.html), but since then we have decided to change our scoring system due to popular demand.

We have now awarded 5 points for the player that tops each statistic, 4 points for the player that comes second, 3 points for third, 2 points for fourth and 1 point for the player that comes in fifth in each statistic. We have then added up the totals and picked the team based on the player that scores highest in the comparison.

To make it fair we have re-done the stats for the defence and the results can be found on the next page (Kompany comes into the team replacing Koscielny):

We will now look at the Premier League midfield using the new scoring system.

Centre Midfield

The results of the centre midfield comparison show that Yohan Cabaye tops the charts with 31 points with Yaya Toure coming in second with 30 points.

Frank Lampard has scored the most goals out of all the centre midfielders in this comparison, as he has an impressive 11 goals this year. This is 5 more goals than Toure and Arteta and 7 more than Cabaye, Scholes and Gerrard.

Lampard has also scored a goal every 205 minutes this season, which is 87 minutes more often than Scholes, 208 minutes more often than Arteta and 237 minutes more often than Toure.

Steven Gerrard has created a chance for Liverpool this season every 35 minutes, which is 6 minutes more often than Lampard and Arteta, 7 minutes more often than Modric and 14 minutes more often than Toure.

Song comes out on top in terms of assists this season as he has an impressive 11 assists to his name. This is 5 more assists than his Toure and Cabaye and 6 more assists than both Lampard and Gerrard.

It’s not surprising that Paul Scholes has completed more passes than anyone else in this comparison, as he has completed 3.28% more passes than Toure, 3.29% more than his United teammate Carrick and 3.96% more than Parker.

Parker and Ramires have made a tackle every 23 minutes this season, which is one minute more often than Cabaye, 3 minutes more often than Tiote and 5 minutes more often than Carrick. Parker has also made an interception every 28 minutes, which is 4 minutes more often than Cabaye and 7 minutes more often than Ramires, Carrick and Modric.

Fellaini has won 84.85% of his tackles this season, which is 1.71% better than Arteta, 3.03% better than Toure and 8.66% better than Tiote and Barry. Fellaini has also won 74% of his aerial duels, which is 1% better than Carrick, 5% more than Barry and 11% more than Song.

Fellaini also wins back possession of the ball in the midfield third every 15 minutes, which is 3 minutes more often than Song and 5 minutes more often than Scholes and Tiote. Although, Tiote wins back possession of the ball in the defensive third of the pitch 2 minutes more often than Song, 4 minutes more often than Barry and 5 minutes more often than Fellaini.

Modric wins the ball back every 175 minutes in the attacking third, which is 12 minutes more often than Gerrard and 19 minutes more often than Ramires.

Arteta has kept the ball well this season as he only gave away possession of the ball every 118 minutes. This is 1 minute longer than Scholes, 20 minutes longer than Lampard and 23 minutes longer than Cabaye.

Carrick has won the highest percentage of ground 50-50s this season, as he has won 10% more than Arteta, 12% more than Cabaye and 13% more than Parker.

Cabaye has created the highest amount of clear cut chances this season as he has created one more than both Toure and Modric and 2 more than Song. Cabaye has also created a clear cut chance every 315 minutes, which is 16 minutes better than Toure and 35 minutes better than Modric.

Therefore, as Cabaye and Toure score the highest amount of points in this comparison they are our choices for the centre midfield positions.

Centre Midfield Choices: Yohan Cabaye and Yaya Toure

 Wide Midfielders

The results of the wide midfielder comparison show that David Silva and Aaron Lennon scored the highest amount of points, with Mata and Dempsey close behind them.

Nasri has completed 85.67% of his passes this season, which is 2.02% better than Silva, 2.92% better than Dempsey and 4.21% better than Lennon.

Lennon has kept possession of the ball well though, as it has taken him 83 minutes to lose possession of the ball this season. This is 17 minutes longer than Young, 25 minutes longer than Jarvis and Mata and 27 minutes longer than Silva.

Lennon has also created a clear-cut chance for his team every 132 minutes, which is 69 minutes better than Silva, 80 minutes better than Valencia and 82 minutes better than his Spurs teammate Bale.

Bale has created 15 clear-cut chances this season though, which is 1 more than Silva, 3 more than Lennon and 4 more than Walcott.

Ben Arfa has made 2.0 dribbles per game this season, which is 0.17 more than Nani and 0.19 more than Bale.

Pilkington has been accurate with 34% of his crosses this season, which 1% more accurate than Dempsey, 7% more accurate than Jarvis and Silva and 8% more accurate than Lennon, Mata and Nasri.

It has also taken the opposition 76 minutes to dispossess Pilkington, which is 7 minutes longer than Jarvis, 8 minutes longer than Valencia and 15 minutes longer than Lennon.

Mata has created a chance every 25 minutes this season, which is 2 minutes more often than Silva, 4 minutes more often than Nasri and 6 minutes more often than Nani.

Dempsey has scored an impressive 17 goals this season, which is 8 more goals than his nearest rival Bale and 9 more than Jarvis, Pilkington, Walcott and Nani. Dempsey has also scored a goal every 195 minutes, which is 51 minutes more often than Pilkington and 67 minutes more often than Young.

Therefore, as Silva and Lennon score the highest points in this comparison they are our choice to play on the wings.
