Lucas Podolski & Theo Walcott – Goal Assist Machines! Stats Analysis

Lucas Podolski assisted three goals, in their encounter with West Ham at the Emirates, and in doing so became the first player in the 2012/13 season to grab 3 or more assists within one game. Those three assists have propelled Podolski straight to the top of the Top Assists chart on our EPLIndex Stats Centre. As you can see from the screenshot below – Lucas now has the most assists in the Premier League and has overtaken Juan Mata and Steven Gerrard.

Podolski’s teammate, Theo Walcott, also comes into the top five with seven assists now. Both Arsenal players aren’t creating a lot of chances with Podolski creating one every 52 minutes and Walcott one every 68 minutes however the impressive statistic for both these players is that both are creating goals more often than any other player when you relate to their creativity. Podolski is creating a goal every 3 chances he creates and Theo Walcott is even more impressive creating a goal every 2.57 chances he creates.

Podolski & Walcott Creative Contribution

Lucas Podolski now has seven goals and nine assists in his first half season at Arsenal. He’s started 20 games and played 1465 minutes whilst Theo Walcott has played 1221 minutes, scored ten and assisted seven. Both players have contributed almost-equally to Arsenal so far – Podolski involved in 16 goals and Walcott involved in 17. So how can we assess their contribution to Arsenal this season? Combined they have managed to assist 16 goals – this is almost half of Arsenal’s total of 33 assists so far in the 2012/13 season. So that works out to 48% of goal assists have come from both of these players this season!

Podolski & Walcott Goal Contribution

Although this article was predominantly about their creativity we thought it would be interesting (for all you statistic hungry Gunners) to add their goals contribution statistics too.

[pullquote_right]Goal/Assist Contribution(mins):
Walcott: 71.8
RvP: 76.9
Podolski: 91.6
Suarez: 104[/pullquote_right]Podolski & Walcott have scored 17 goals between them which amounts to 37% of Arsenal’s goals so far in the Premier League (46). It’s safe to say that combined both of these players have been very important to Arsenal’s goal of Champions League football next season – especially Walcott who’s on an amazing run of goals and assists at the moment (more on this later).

Overall Lucas Podolski has been involved in a goal every 91.6 minutes – so he creates or scores a goal almost every game. Theo Walcott on the other hand is creating or scoring a goal every 71.8 minutes which is very impressive. To compare let’s look at the figure of the top player in the Premier League at the moment, and former teammate, Robin van Persie, who creates or scores a goal every 76.9 minutes at the moment. So Theo Walcott is performing at higher level right now and the signing of his new contract should be a massive boost for all at Arsenal.

Theo Walcott Form

Theo Walcott’s rich vein of form has been since November – below you will see stats for Theo from November to January (another excellent feature from our Stats Centre). Ignoring the Manchester United game Theo has created six goals in his last eleven Premier League games whilst only creating twelve chances.

Walcott is even more impressive in terms of goals scoring – he has managed to score eight goals in his last ten appearances (order of games in Match Day and not by date – last night’s game stats are on there!). So the majority of his goals and assists this season have come in the last three months. He’s certainly the form player in the Premier League right now.

The importance of Theo Walcott signing a new deal at Arsenal can be weighted by the statistics above – he is sure to be the difference if Arsenal are to make the Champions League spots at the end of the season. The fitness of both Lucas Podolski and Theo Walcott will be crucial to their campaign (so far 48% of assists and 37% of goals) and their next fixture against Liverpool will be a very important one. The Merseysiders have crept up on Arsenal, and a loss at home to them will see Liverpool climb to level points with the Gunners.
