Liverpool 5 Swansea 0 | In-depth Team Match Stats

Liverpool hammered a second string Swansea at Anfield by five goals to nil. They were awarded two penalties which Gerrard and Sturridge both scored – the first penalties scored at Anfield since May 2011 – Luis Suarez also scored a peach of a goal whilst Jose Enrique and debutant Philippe Coutinho also found the back of the net.

Liverpool attempted 35 shots against Swansea equalling their highest attempts total in the last six years (last time was against Birmingham City at Anfield on 9th November 2011). Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge were starting together for the first time and they were all on top form against a Swansea side that took a risk by resting many players.

As shown by the player influence above Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Luis Suarez were all heavily involved in the game. Steven Gerrard put his nightmare penalty miss of Monday night behind him by finding the net today. Glen Johnson continued an excellent season as he was involved in most of Liverpool’s good play and especially any build up on the right hand-side. In fact nine players from the first eleven attempted shots. Only Carragher and Reina didn’t attempt a shot at goal today.

Luis Suarez created 8 chances in the game, more than he’s ever created in the Premier League for Liverpool, created a goal and scored one. Daniel Sturridge matched that from his team-mate whilst Coutinho scored on his full début. A perfect day for the Liverpool forward line at Swansea’s expense who must have thought they were on a hiding to nothing in the first half as Liverpool laid siege to their goal attempting 22 shots in the first half alone. The clean-sheet for Liverpool moved them to second most clean-sheets in the League and the highest at home in the Premier League for 2012/13.

Howard Webb has now taken charge of four Swansea games in the Premier League and they’ve won none of them whilst Liverpool have finally won a game which Howard Webb took charge of, their last coming on 23rd April 2011 against Birmingham City.
Sturridge has been involved in a goal every 73 minutes for Liverpool since his move from Chelsea (Premier League)
Swansea rested Williams, Michu, Dyer, Routledge and Rangel which is half of their side so maybe they were expecting this. Saying that poorer teams have come to Anfield in the past and kept clean-sheets so maybe that was what Laudrup was hoping for but that backfired in the end.
