Brendan Rodgers sets out summer transfer plans | Sturridge / Coutinho Stats

Brendan Rodgers wants at least three players who match the quality of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho. With the apparent success of the January signings from Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively, the Liverpool manager has outlined his plans for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Rodgers was keen to stress to the Telegraph that he will be looking for players who can contribute to the team, rather than sign a great number of them for the sake of depth. “It is quality we are after, not quantity,” he said. Hoping to avoid a repeat of last summer’s transfer window where Liverpool were left without sufficient depth in the striker position, Rodgers hopes to have a list of at least two quality players for every position this year.

The manager added he will have a preference in players to go after, but having an extra one or two names on the list will be beneficial for the club’s transfer aims.

“Of course you have an ideal target, but we are getting to a situation now where, for me, you have to have three players and if one doesn’t come off you have to be comfortable with the other two. If you get one of those you are happy. There is a lot of terrific work going on with the scouting department getting those lists together,” he said.

Rodgers believes that Liverpool will need some additions in the summer if they are to turn their good form into a challenge for the Champion’s League places next season. “There is no doubt there is a natural rebuilding that will come with the likes of Jamie Carragher retiring. I am happy with the squad if I can then put another three or four quality players to it,” he added.

Despite the apparent need for new signings, Rodgers says he is happy for the club’s youngsters to step in and cover for more senior players. Raheem Sterling and Suso have benefitted from this approach this season, but the manager admits there is a still a possibility they could go out on loan. “Suso has clearly shown he has been a very good cover player for us this season, the longer plan for him we have to have a look. Does he actually have to go and play somewhere for a year and get experience?”

“If the young players are good enough they will be involved in the squad, but I have to look at the individual plan to see if they can be here.”
