Liverpool Football Club have announced on their website today that they have principally agreed a deal with Kolo Toure to sign with the club as a free agent on July 1st. The Mersey giants have moved quickly to replace the experience lost in Jamie Carragher with a former Premier League title winner in Kolo Toure. The expectancy of Toure would be that of an experienced back-up centre back whilst Liverpool look to find a first choice centre-back partner for Daniel Agger with Martin Skrtel and Seb Coates also looking to be moved on this summer.
The Liverpool Echo have also reported that Kolo Toure has agreed a two year deal after passing a medical earlier on today.
Kolo was a part of the “Invincibles” team that went unbeaten for an entire Premier League season. Whilst Kolo isn’t at his peak anymore he played 917 minutes for Manchester City last season and faired impressively (shown above) in comparison to Jamie Carragher. Toure played a small part in a Manchester City back-line that were the best defensive unit in the Premier League for 2012/13.
Whilst Jamie Carragher is irreplaceable in terms of being able to give his all for his club, Kolo Toure brings a wealth of experience that would have been lacking after the loss of Carragher. It’s certainly interesting to see that Liverpool are moving quickly in the transfer market this summer as they are usually slow starters.
