Will Mourinho Regret Letting Lukaku Go? Compared to Chelsea Strikers

After seeing Romulu Lukaku terrorise the Newcastle United defence, Chelsea fans must be wondering why Jose Mourinho let him go out on loan when they desperately need a goal-scorer themselves. Their own strike force of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba has failed to impress so far this season as they have failed to score a single goal between them. Meanwhile the young Belgian striker has netted three times for Everton in their last two matches. If the Chelsea strikers continue their goal drought for much longer, it will significantly damage their title chances.

Torres has played 233 league minutes so far which has led to four shots (one every 58 minutes). His shooting accuracy is 50%, missing one clear cut chance. He has had more success when it comes to creating chances as he has managed to create six chances but none of them have been converted by his team mates. His pass completion is also poor as it stands at 64.2%.

Ba has only played in one league match (in which he played 65 minutes). He managed one shot in that match which was on target. He also managed to create one chance. In his time at Newcastle last season, he played in 20 matches and scored 13 goals. His shooting accuracy was 53%. This shows that the Senegalese man can be clinical in the Premier League and in theory these stats should improve at Chelsea given that he would receive more service.

New signing Samuel Eto’o has played in two matches (154 minutes) and has had 8 shots with a shooting accuracy of 50%. The Cameroon International has missed two clear cut chances already without scoring at all which is not acceptable for a top four quality striker. He created one chance for his team-mates.

Meanwhile Lukaku has played in two matches for Everton (135 minutes) has already found the net three times (scoring once every 45 minutes) from only six shots. His shooting accuracy (67%) and chance conversion (50%) are really good especially for a player who Chelsea thought wasn’t ready for the top level. The Belgian has also created three chances for his team mates, one of which was an assist for Ross Barkley.

Chelsea have only scored 7 goals so far this season (1.2 per game) which is a lot worse than title rivals Manchester City who have scored 14 and Arsenal who have 13. Even a struggling Manchester United side have managed to score 8 goals. With the array of attacking talent that Chelsea have to play behind the striker, you would expect their three front men to get lots of good service which should lead to goals. This really is the area that Mourinho needs to improve or it will cost them the title.

Torres played well against Tottenham despite his sending off. He made some good runs and he was a threat throughout. If he plays like that more often, he will start to score goals and he may finally start to pay off his £50m price tag. Eto’o looks like he is passed it as he looks uncomfortable with the pace of the Premier League, he has missed a few easy chances and has lost a lot of his pace. Personally, I think the best striker at the football club is Ba. He has scored lots of goals in the Premier League in a poor Newcastle team with limited service. If he is utilised properly by Mourinho and given the starting berth up front, Ba will score goals as he is a natural finisher.

None of the strikers available to Mourinho are good enough to start in a title winning side, whereas Lukaku has the potential to become a world class striker. Chelsea are in a developmental stage in which they can afford to play young players to give them experience. If Lukaku had been given a year playing for Chelsea in both the league and the Champions League, he would have improved a lot and he may even have been able to fire the blues to glory.
