Tottenham welcome a Newcastle United side that haven’t won at White Hart Lane in their last four attempts, but their home victory against Chelsea will give the Magpies the confidence they can nick a result against Spurs who have under-performed at home so far this season.

Interesting Statistics

Spurs haven’t lost at home to Newcastle since March 2008.

Chelsea conceded their first set-piece goal in the PL last season – to a Yoann Gouffran header. [via Stats Zone]

Key Players

Andros Townsend

The young Spurs winger has been the only player who can be held in some regard so far this season in terms of Spurs’ attacking potency. While Gylfi Sigurdsson and Roberto Soldado have recorded important goals, they have been fairly inconsistent in games, floating in and out of games – while Townsend has been a threat on the right, although hasn’t looked as good in the last two games versus Everton and Hull.

So far this season Townsend has attempted 74 dribbles – with 51 of those successful. This is an impressive return so far for Townsend, it’s clear to see how confident he is on the ball which must be a delight for Spurs fan after losing such an integral part of the team in Gareth Bale who loved to put defences on the back burner.

Townsend stats

Against Everton, Townsend created a total of (3) chances, the joint most chances created along with Jan Vertonghen in the game at Goodison Park.

Yet again, Townsend topped the charts for most shots at goal against Everton with (5) – one issue I have with the England international is, while he has the confidence to do this, he needs to train into his game when and when not too shoot, as in the last game two of his shots were blocked, showing that defences are catching onto this tactic.

Yohan Cabaye

The Frenchman has been in fine form since his transfer u-turn in late August when he wanted a move to the Emirates. Whether he is battling for a move, or to be a permanent fixture in the French national side’s midfield – it’s clear to see the Frenchman is concentrating solely on his game.

Cabaye stats

Yohan Cabaye played the most passes for Newcastle against Chelsea with 51 passes, with 44 accurate passes played – a 86% passing accuracy. The Frenchman looks forward with passes he intends to play, which is shown with his 39% forward passing against the West London side last Saturday. His ability to read the game is what puts Cabaye up there with the best midfielders in the country, the former Lille playmaker totalled (4) interceptions against Chelsea on Saturday, totalling 75 touches of the ball.

Cabaye has created (2) goals for his Newcastle United team-mates, with the most recent assist a brilliant free-kick – of which Alan Pardew took credit – met by a Yoann Gouffran header.

While he looks to be the creative outlet for the Magpies, the Frenchman has also added (2) goals from a total of (20) shots – averaging a shot every 28 mins, and a shot on target every 71 minutes.

In essence, Cabaye is the player that not only Spurs need, but the player most of the top six needs; he can create, he can score, he can read the game, he tackles – he is the complete midfielder.

Prediction and Odds

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Newcastle United

Spurs have looked solid in the majority of their games in all competitions so far this season, and have yet to concede a goal from a team outside of London – in terms of that statistic, it might be worth backing Spurs to win to nil on Sunday available at BetVictor, aslong as their French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris starts.

With Newcastle bearing the brunt of defensive injuries, it may be time for Roberto Soldado to earn a few more goals for his side from open play, I’m backing Roberto Soldado to score first for Spurs @ 7/2 on Sunday.
