There have been some consistently brilliant performances from some of the players in the Premier League so far this season, but which player deserves to be named as the player of the year so far?
We take a detailed look at the top 5 contenders (in my opinion) statistics and see just how well they have played for their respective clubs so far.
Wayne Rooney
After a summer of uncertainty over Wayne Rooney’s future at Old Trafford, the England striker has proven just why it was so important for David Moyes to keep him at the club.
Rooney has scored 5 goals, at a rate of a goal every 167 minutes for Manchester United in the Premier League so far this season as well as getting an impressive 4 assists in his 10 appearances so far.
After stating his displeasure in playing in midfield for United, Rooney has impressed in a role  that has seen him play closer to Van Persie and perform a duel role as both as a support striker and a number 10 under David Moyes.
With Rooney no longer being the focal point of United’s attack it has given him the free role to be more involved in the play and help create chances as well as score goals. With this being the case, it is no surprise that Rooney has been Manchester United’s most creative player this season, creating 17 chances at a rate of a chance every 49 minutes in the Premier League.
Rooney has also assisted twice as many goals as any other Manchester United player this season, as well as having the joint most assists in the Premier League with Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud, Kevin Mirallas, Sergio Aguero and Steven Gerrard.
In terms of clear cut chances, the England striker also tops the bill for Manchester United, creating 3 at a rate of a clear cut chance every 278 minutes and has been Manchester United’s stand out player so far this season in terms of creativity.
Wayne has also done his bit defensively for his side so far this season, entering into a ground duel 4.24 minutes more often than last season as well as winning 7% more of these ground duels than last season. As well as entering into ground duels more often, Rooney has also made 7 interceptions for his side, which is impressive as he only made 11 in the whole of last season.
Rooney has also improved his shooting accuracy by 3% and his chance conversion by 1% this season compared to last season, but is more than likely to even out over the course of the season.
Wayne Rooney is enjoying his football at Old Trafford again this season, with it showing in some of his performances so far and is definitely a contender for the player of the season so far.
Aaron Ramsey
Aaron Ramsey has been on fire this season, scoring 6 goals and getting 4 assists in his 11 appearances in the Premier League.
Used mainly as a utility player last season, Ramsey found himself playing on the right hand side of midfield more often than not and it wasn’t until Wenger played him alongside Arteta at the end of last season and Flamini at the start of this season in the centre of Arsenal’s midfield that we started seeing the best of him.
His all action displays have caught the eye of fans and pundits alike, but it is his goalscoring that has significantly improved this season. The Welshman has scored 6 goals at a rate of a goal every 154 minutes in the Premier League this season, hitting the target with an impressive 74% of his 19 shots (not including blocked) and converting an even more impressive 32% of his chances.
This is compared to last season when Ramsey scored only one goal in 2086 minutes of Premier League football, having just 12 shots on target, which is 2 fewer than he has managed already this season. His chance conversion has also shot up from 3% last season to 32% this season.
The Welshman has the joint most assists in the Premier League this season with 4 and is double the amount than he assisted last season. Ramsey is creating fewer chances than he did last season, which is not surprising considering his change in position but the chances he is creating are of a  higher quality, with the midfielder creating 4 clear cut chances this season, just 2 fewer than he created in the whole of the previous season.
The midfielder is also the top tackler in the Premier League this season, winning 84% of his 51 tackles and has made a tackle 11 minutes more often than he did during the 2012/2013 season. Ramsey has entered into ground duels and aerial duels more often than last season, winning 3% more of his aerial duels and 8% more of his ground duels as he adapts to his new role in centre of midfield.
His passing accuracy is slightly down on last season, from 86.66% last season to 84.56% this season but this is to be expected with the amount of passes Ramsey is having to make in centre midfield, with 3% more of his passes going forwards this season.
With the return of Mikel Arteta and the importance of Mathieu Flamini defensive contribution, it will be important for Aaron Ramsey to continue his good form for the rest of the season in whatever position he finds himself in, but there is no doubt he has been one of the stand out players so far in the Premier League.
Luis Suarez
Since returning against Sunderland at the end of September there has been no stopping Luis Suarez, with the Uruguayan being in scintillating form.
Suarez is the joint top goalscorer in the Premier League this season with 8 goals, even though he missed the first 5 games of the season due to his ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic. The forward has hit the target with 50% of his 30 shots this season, scoring a goal every 67 minutes and has converted an impressive 27% of his chances.
As well as having the best mins per goal ratio for players to have at least 5 shots this season, the Uruguayan has also created a chance every 30 minutes, which is more often than Wayne Rooney, Aaron Ramsey, Steven Gerrard  and Eden Hazard. Only Steven Gerrard (29) has created more chances for Liverpool this season than Luis Suarez (18) and has already hit the woodwork 3 times, which is the joint most in the Premier League with Daniel Sturridge.
Suarez has improved his passing accuracy in the final third by 7% this season compared to last season and has improved his open play passing by 5%, although this is likely to level out during the season.
If Luis Suarez can continue this form and stay out of the trouble for the rest of the season, then I can see no reason why he wouldn’t win the golden boot or even the PFA player of the year.
