Clear-Cut Chances Stats | Ramsey, Suarez, Negredo, Chadli et al Comparison

So what is a clear cut chance?
A situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score usually in a one-on-one scenario or from very close range.
I’d like to call them “sitters” because it’s an easier way of describing it to the football fan out there. A free header, a one-on-one, a penalty – basically any free shot on goal for a player who is un-marked and only has the keeper to beat.

Clear-Cut Creators

The table below can be sorted by clicking on the columns. If you wish to use the data below please do link back or credit EPLIndex.com. The table is a list of the top clear-cut chance creators (where a player has created five or more clear-cut chances).

Philippe Coutinho impresses as he creates a clear-cut chance most frequently. A lot of the attention at Liverpool has gone to Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson of late however the little Brazilian has been going about his business and these stats indicate that he’s the best in the Premier League at creating clear-cut chances.

A better way to look at analysing the clear-cut chance creators is to check out the graphics below. We’ve created a couple of Radar Charts to show the difference in Total Created Chances and the creation of Clear Cut chances. Whilst Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez are the top creators of total chances from the subset of players chosen in the Premier League which players are creating a higher proportion of clear-cut chances?

The answer is in the 2nd Radar chart below where close to 50% of Peter Crouch’s chances are Clear Cut chances – an amazing return really. Negredo, Coutinho and Ramsey also impress here.

Total Chances Created by Clear-Cut Creators

No clear correlation in the Radar Charts show that the Total Chance creation metric may be a little misleading – surely the clear cut chance creation is what is important and a metric that clearly defines a “real” scoring opportunity.

Percentage of Clear Cut Chances Created from Total Chances

The numbers are all above ready for you to sort and I believe the Radar Charts are pretty self-explanatory – whilst total chance creation will be used in football metrics heavily I think it’s time bloggers and analysts started to use the clear cut chance metric a lot more in relation to creativity and finishing. The goal assist statistic is one that is a little misleading! Obviously a goal assist is dependant on both the creator and finisher as the creator does not get any accolade if the striker continues to miss chances.

Take Stewart Downing for Liverpool in 2011/12 as an example. He created 11 clear-cut chances for Liverpool however none of their strikers converted any of these and Downing was criticised for not creating a single goal that season. This is where the clear-cut chance metric should be used and that season Stewart Downing was actually very creative but Liverpool’s strike force was a shambles. The clear-cut chance stat isn’t readily available everywhere however we can see that it will be one of the most sought after statistics going forward as football stats continue to evolve.

To quickly conclude, it is Christmas Day after-all:

 • The top clear-chance creators are Ramsey, Suarez and Coutinho.
 • Peter Crouch has created the highest proportion of clear-chances from his total chances created.
 • Philippe Coutinho is creating a clear-cut chance most often this season in the Premier League!

We will be looking at clear-cut chance conversion for teams over the holiday period so stay tuned and please do share this article!
