Becca’s PL Round-Up: Spurs win at OT, Arsenal top and Hazard inspires

The top four as they are now, (Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool) all picked up three points on the New Years Day fixtures, although it wasn’t easy.

Arsenal left it to the last three minutes before claiming the win at The Emirates as Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott struck home to beat Cardiff. As Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked on from the stands, Cardiff held on to what looked to be a 0-0 draw, before the Premier League leaders showed why they are still at the top. With 68% of the possession and having over 20 chances, Arsenal certainly dominated in terms of keeping the ball, but it was finding that one crucial goal that they struggled with. After getting their reward in the end, the Gunners still sit at the top of the table for the time being, even though they now only have a one point lead.

Manchester City were close to slipping up against Swansea in the early kick-off. Although leading for the majority of the first half, Swansea came back to equalise, before City then went on to 3-1 in the second 45. A late goal for Swansea in the 90th minute from Wilfried Bony, turned out to not make that much of a difference in the end, but did leave a nervy finish to the game. The main man for City, statistically, was Jesus Navas, creating 3 of their 9 chances, as well as completing all 4 attempted dribbles successfully. Manchester City now sit 2nd in the table, as they start to make their charge in a bid for the title.

Chelsea have also made sure that they’re in the mix at the top of the table, as they continued their good run to beat Southampton 3-0 at St Mary’s. Fernando Torres got the first goal in the 60th minute for the Blues, before Willian and Oscar also got themselves on the scoresheet. Torres had a total of 4 shots on goal, and a shooting accuracy of 50%.The defeat for Southampton means that they’ve only had one win in their last nine, whereas Chelsea now stay in 3rd place in the table, only 2 points off the top.

Liverpool were comfortable victors at home to Hull City. Steve Bruce’s side did have some chances, however, it was a fairly quiet day for Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool goal. Goals from Daniel Agger and (who else) Luis Suarez, were enough for the Reds to pick up three much needed points, after their two defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea over the Christmas period. One of the key men for Liverpool this season is Jordan Henderson, and he was still heavily involved again on Wednesday – he created a total of 3 chances, as well as having 88% long ball accuracy. Glen Johnson came off early in the game with a knock, whereas Captain Steven Gerrard was reintroduced after an injury kept him out for Liverpool’s last few games.

Tottenham did enough to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. After an astonishing 6th league defeat of the season for Moyes’ men, a 2-1 scoreline meant that Spurs took the three points back to London with them. Adebayor and Eriksen (also an assist) were the all important goal scorers for the away side, as United could only manage to get one goal back through Danny Welbeck. The win is the second consecutive for Tottenham at Old Trafford – an impressive feat. Can Tim Sherwood continue his good start as they look to break into the top four?

Newcastle’s impressive run of late came to an end after they were beaten 1-0 away to West Brom. A late penalty converted recorded by Saido Berahino was enough to get the Baggies the three points, as they now sit 14th in the table, 4 points off the drop zone.
