Manchester United’s £37.1m signing | Juan Mata EPL Career Stats

Manchester United completed the signing of £37.1m Juan Mata breaking a club-record in the process. The fee paid to Chelsea breaks the record of £30.75m which was paid to Tottenham for Dimitar Berbatov.

Manchester United supporters will be excited that they have purchased one of the league’s deadliest creators over the last two years with only David Silva being able to rival his creativity and assists.

Below you’ll see a break down of goals, assists and chances created from his time at Chelsea.

Mata Career Stats

Mata created 227 chances in his time in England and only compatriot David Silva can boast a better record for creativity statistics. Breaking down the numbers 55.5% of Mata’s assists were from open-play whilst 69% of his chances created are from open-play which indicates that he will be a threat from either open play or set play situations. What will be interesting to see is whether this affects Wayne Rooney’s position as the set piece taker.

Mata spent 6,943 minutes on the pitch for Chelsea, in the Premier League, since joining from Valencia so using this figure we can determine how often he was creating and scoring goals. The diminutive Spaniard created a chance every 30.6 minutes in the Premier League, whilst assisting a goal every 257 minutes. Mata scored a goal every 385 minutes and created a clear-cut chance every 267 minutes.

In terms of crossing – Mata has crossed the ball 533 times in the Premier League and found a team mate with 131 of them. That’s a crossing accuracy of 25% which is very respectable in the Premier League.

It seems a perfect fit for both sides with Mata needing first team football in a World Cup year and Manchester United struggling with injuries to key players like Rooney and Van Persie. Once both of their star strikers are back Manchester United will have some real quality in terms of creativity and finishing power. Juan Mata is no doubt a marquee signing that could just turn around the season for the Red Devils after being dumped out of both domestic cups in a torrid January 2014.

Unfortunately Juan Mata has played for Chelsea in the Champions League so cannot represent Manchester United in that competition this season however he will have a major role to play in ensuring that the Red Devils qualify by achieving a top four finish in the Premier League.
