Sergio Aguero Player Season Review

When fit, Sergio Aguero has been in fantastic form for Manchester City so far this season. The Argentinian is now in his third season in the Premier League, and he has established himself as one of the league’s best players. Aguero has 15 goals this season which impressively have come from 15 starts.

aguero

City have been very attacking under Manuel Pellegrini this season, and Aguero is someone who has benefited from his style of management. What makes Aguero’s total so far this season even more notable is that he has already scored 3 more league goals than he managed last season in just over half the appearances. Although he was also hampered by injury last season, this season under similar circumstances he has performed better than he has in any other campaign.

Goal Threat

Aguero has managed to score a goal every 79.93 minutes which works out at a goal in every game. This average is the best in the league, even better than Luis Suarez who has managed a goal every 81.91 minutes. He has also had a shooting accuracy of 60%. This shot accuracy is the highest in the league for any striker with over 10 goals and is only bettered by Eden Hazard who has 64%. Surprisingly, Aguero has the second lowest clear-cut chance conversion rate after Olivier Giroud with 40%. What this does say is that Aguero is converting very difficult chances, as he has only managed to score 6 of his 15 clear-cut chances but has still managed 15 goals this season. This is highlighted by Aguero having a chance conversion rate of 26%, which is only bettered by Daniel Sturridge with 28% when it comes to the leagues other strikers.

Big Game Player

What sets Aguero apart is his goals against the bigger teams. Aguero has managed to score against all the members of the current top 8, except Liverpool who he has not played this season. Against the other six teams, he has scored 9 goals in 6 games. Of these games, City have only lost once showing that Aguero often steps up to the plate in the big games. In comparison, Luis Suarez has played has played 7 games against top 8 opposition and has only managed 4 goals. Although Suarez has netted 23 times this season, these goals have often come against the smaller teams. Aguero has also done well against the smaller teams when fit. Since scoring against Manchester United in September, Aguero has scored in 10 of his 12 Premier League appearances. This run has included goals before and after a hamstring injury which ruled him out for just over a month.

Sergio Aguero Attacking Stats

Partnership With Negredo

Not only has Aguero’s goal scoring record been excellent, but he has also contributed 5 assists. This highlights the all-round contribution he has brought this season to City’s team. He has formed a strong partnership with Alvaro Negredo, and the two are City’s leading scorers in all compeitions. Aguero has clearly benefitted playing alongside another striker, although he has also been adept at playing upfront by himself as he showed against Chelsea earlier in the season. Despite such a good record together, Aguero and Negredo have not been the best partnership in the league. Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have managed 39 goals between them and have supplied 12 assists collectively to their teammates. In comparison Aguero and Negredo have scored 24 goals and contributed 8 assists between them. In all competitions however, they have managed an astounding 48 goals between them. Their partnership is a contributing factor to City challenging for the quadruple.

There is no doubt that Aguero has proven himself as one of the best strikers in the world this season. Along with Luis Suarez, he has been achieving the type of goal ratios that we have seen in Spain with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but have yet to see in the Premier League. It would be interesting to see Aguero’s goal tally if he had remained fit the whole of the season. When he returns from his latest injury setback, he is certain to be amongst the goals once again for City. With the Capital One Cup Final, Champions League Knockout stages, latter rounds of the FA Cup and a title fight all coming up for City, they will need Aguero to continue his great form if they are to challenge on all fronts.
