Mel edges closer to Baggies exit

Pepe Mel continued to be the bookies’ favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job following West Brom’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United, a result which leaves the Baggies just one point above the relegation zone. Following a week in which the Spaniard had been forced to handle the aftermath caused by Nicolas Anelka’s five-match ban following his controversial ‘quenelle’ gesture, Mel’s fortunes didn’t change against the defending champions.

Goals from Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck were enough to resign the Baggies to a defeat that leaves them perilously close to the bottom three and seemingly set for a nail-biting end to the season.

Mel hasn’t won a Premier League game since replacing Steve Clarke at the club at the start of the year, and the former Real Betis manager admitted the next four games against fellow relegation candidates could be crucial for his hopes of staying in a job.

“I don’t know that (if I will be replaced), it doesn’t depend on me. The next four games are very, very important for the club, starting with Swansea, and now we have to recuperate the team,” said Mel.

The Baggies will be well aware that picking up some points over the next four games could be the difference between survival and relegation this season. Following the trip to Swansea, Mel’s men will travel to Hull City before welcoming Cardiff to the Hawthorns, ending the run with an away match against fellow strugglers Norwich City at Carrow Road.

While it remains to be seen whether Mel will see out that run of games as West Brom manager, it’s evidently clear that the Spaniard’s time in the Premier League could be a short one unless he starts picking up some wins over the next month.
