“A Result Which is Hurtful” – Roberto Martinez

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has revealed that the pressure of securing top four football got to his team last night as they lost 3-2 to Crystal Palace at Goodison Park.

“We wanted to win so much that we stopped being ourselves and that is what we have to learn from.

“It is not in our hands, but you have to be as strong as you can be.

“There will be twists and turns because it is that stage of the season. There will always be surprises at this stage of the season.”

The Toffees had the opportunity to leapfrog over Arsenal by two points as they had a game in hand over the Gunners, but following defeat to Tony Pulis’ side they now sit behind the Red-Half North London by a point. Everton were without their influential Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy as Jason Puncheon and Scott Dann put the Eagles two goals ahead. Steven Naismith, who was Man of the Match in the Toffees’ victory over Arsenal two weeks ago, brought them within a goal of equalising, before Cameron Jerome restored the two goal lead. Kevin Mirallas’ late goal was in vain as Palace ran out winners.

Everton have had a tremendous season under Martinez, but whether they will finally rid themselves of their “chokers” label remains to be seen. With both Manchester Clubs still to come to Goodison Park, the blue half of Merseyside will have an extremely difficult task ahead of them.
