Welbeck’s Frustration – Could He Be Seeking Pastures New?

Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck has recently commented that he contemplated leaving the club after becoming frustrated at being played out of position under David Moyes. The England striker has often been praised for his versatility, but Welbeck has made it clear that he would prefer to play centrally.

Welbeck Frustration

Welbeck managed 9 league goals last season and all of these came in games where he played in a central role. He was particularly prolific during December and January where he managed to score six goals in six games. It is form like this that makes Welbeck believe that he deserves his chance to play centrally. However competition at United is extremely fierce with Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie often preferred. Even after these two Javier Hernandez is also often played centrally, so Welbeck’s chances are hard to come by.

Welbeck has reacted positively to the appointment of current Dutch national team manager Louis Van Gaal. Danny has stated that he enjoys playing for England as he has more freedom in a three up front system. Van Gaal has often employed a 4-3-3 system so the young star will be likely to feel more comfortable in any of the three forward roles. Despite this, there could be even more competition at Manchester United next year as major squad upheaval has been mooted. Welbeck will have to prove to Van Gaal that he is more than just a utility man and show he can nail down a starting spot in one particular position.  In the previous season he played left midfield as well as right midfield on occasion, a position he has not enjoyed, but has now become known for playing. If he is not able to get a central berth, Welbeck could move on in the summer.

There would be a long list of potential suitors for Welbeck due to his versatility, but much like when Daniel Sturridge signed for Liverpool, Welbeck could look for assurances that he would be played in a central position more often than not. The Mancunian is a player with a few years of Champions League experience and could play for many of the Premier League’s big teams. A move to Tottenham would be a logical move for both player and club. With Roberto Soldado , Emmanuel Adebayor and Harry Kane being the only strikers at the club, Spurs could do a lot worse than Welbeck. Welbeck managed nine goals from 15 starts last season, just two less than Spurs top scorer Adebayor who managed 11 goals in 20 starts. If Mauricio Pochettino is Spurs’ manager next season, Welbeck could be used in the same way that Jay Rodriguez was used for Southampton last season.

At just 23, Danny Welbeck is still a young forward with his best days ahead of him. He has been excellent at international level for England where he has been a regular. If he is given the chance to do the same at club level, he could become a valuable asset to any team that he plays for. With the World Cup this summer, good performances from Welbeck could make him subject to interest from other clubs. Whether Van Gaal chooses to make him a regular may be a big factor in where Welbeck will be playing his football come the start of the next Premier League season.
