Jamie O’Hara | Hoping for more goals “In the hole”

When Jamie O’Hara joined Wolves on loan in January, he was an instant success. His stunning strike in the Black Country Derby earned him instant hero status at Molineux, despite a last gasp equalizer from the Baggies. His form continued and he became a key part of the Wolves midfield, ultimately helping them to avoid relegation, highlighted by his pivotal goal on survival sunday against Blackburn. This earned him a permanent move to Molineux in the summer and the 25 year old looked to have carried his good form into this season after Wolves started the season brightly, unbeaten in their first 3 games with 7 points out of 9.

O'Hara Defensive Stats 11/12

However, the West Midlands side quickly slumped to five straight defeats and the midfielder was one of the most notable under performers. He went missing in games against the likes of QPR, where Barton and Faurlin made O’Hara look like a school boy. However he somehow managed to avoid a lot of flack from the fans, with his midfield counterpart, the marmite of Molineux – Karl Henry, taking the brunt of it. Perhaps his off the field worries with his premature son, who has recently been cleared as being in full health, was a contributing factor but one thing was for sure, this was not the Jamie O’Hara that the Wolves fans had previously seen as the answer to all their midfield woes.

On the 22nd of October, in what seemed a must win game, Wolves faced new boys Swansea at Molineux.

Jamie O'Hara in fine form

It didn’t begin well and the Molineux men found themselves 2-0 down at half time after a lack-luster performance. Mick made changes late in the second half which seemed to allow O’Hara more freedom to get forward and two quick fire goals in the last 10 minutes, one from Doyle and one from the man himself, saw Wolves earn a point many thought they didn’t deserve. Was this the turning point in the season for Wanderers? Possibly not when the next two fixtures in league cup were against Man City, who had just come off the back of a 6-1 demolishing of their neighbour’s, United.

Unsurprisingly, Wolves lost both games, 5-2 in the cup, a game in which O’Hara scored minutes after coming off of the bench and 3-1 in the league at the Etihad. Two defeats but a lot of positives to take from two good performances, and the whole team looked like it was beginning to gel again.

O'Hara Passing Stats 11/12

The following home game against Wigan certainly was a must win. McCarthy had been quoted before the game as saying he was going to play O’Hara in that role just behind the striker again as he did against Man City in an unchanged line up. Although the team performance wasn’t vintage, O’Hara’s personal performance was and the Englishman opened the scoring with his 3rd goal in 4 games.

O'Hara Attacking Stats 11/12

Wolves came out 3-1 winners with a priceless 3 points to take into the international break. The role that O’Hara is playing, in behind Kevin Doyle seems to allow him room to play and make things happen, the reason he came to Molineux in the first place, and Wolves fans should be optimistic that the 4-4-1-1 formation will take the team into many more positive performances.
