Chelsea v Sunderland Preview | Team News, Key Men and Stats

The final day of a remarkable season is upon us as newly crowned champions Chelsea take on Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.  Dick Advocaat has steadied the ship after it appeared to be sinking under Gus Poyet. Sunderland put on a terrific defensive display that gained them a crucial point at the Emirates against Arsenal, ensuring their safety in the Premier League. Chelsea, on the other hand would be looking to end their campaign on a high, especially after their embarrassing 3-0 loss at West Brom.

Team News

Chelsea

Oscar, Ramires and Zouma will all miss the game through injury while Hazard faces a late fitness test. I expect him to sit this one out though.

Sunderland

As for Sunderland, Liam Bridcutt and Riki Alvarez are definitely out of this game.

Interesting Numbers

  • Sunderland have drawn an incredible 17 games.
  • Only Burnley have scored fewer goals than Sunderland this season.
  • Chelsea have conceded only eight times in 18 home matches this season.

Key Men

Diego Costa – Chelsea

Costa began the season brilliantly with 10 goals in his first 12 games. His form has been up and down throughout the season mainly because of his injuries. However, he has scored 19 goals in his first season in the Premier League, ranking 3rd in the top goals scorers list this season. He returned form injury last week in the defeat at West Brom after 6 weeks out and he’ll be looking to finish the season on a high.

Jermain Defoe – Sunderland

Despite only joining Sunderland in January, Defoe has settled in quickly  scoring 4 goals in 16 appearances including that cracker against Newcastle. Like Costa, He would also look to end the season on a high after he and his team guided his club to safety last week.

Prediction
It’s really simple. A comfortable win for Chelsea is the only result I see in this one.

Chelsea 2-0 Sunderland.

  1. Jermain Defoe the ‘key man’??? Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Four goals in 16 games is a pathetic return for a striker.

Key player will be the Sunderland goalkeeper.
