Last Season was undoubtedly a turbulent season for Villa fans with the sudden departure of Martin ONeill, then Kevin McDonald trying to steady the ship and the appointment of Gerard Houllier.
Gerard Houllier stamped his authority on team with the change in training regimes and froze out a few individuals. An individual that felt the brunt of Houllier’s treatment was Stephen Warnock who suffered by being banished Warnock to train for 5 months with the reserves.
With the introduction of a new manager, Alex McLeish welcomed Stephen Warnock back to the first team and been ever present this season contributing so much more to the team. This season he has featured in all 15 Premier League games for Aston Villa which is only 4 games less than last season. Warnock has also scored in this campaign in Villa’s loss 4-1 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
This season for Aston Villa has been under scrutiny with the appointment of Alex McLeish and his defensive tactics but the truth is that under McLeish Warnock has almost achieved the same amount of games already as he did in last seasons campaign and Villa have conceded much less; 19 goals this campaign. This compared to 19 games last season where Villa conceded 34 goals in which Stephen Warnock was involved in with the goal conceded average coming down from every 1.73 games to just 1.27 goals a game.
Stephan Warnock’s defending has improved too as well as the teams with his ground 50/50’success rate being 63% but the most impressive stat was the aerial 50/50’s percentage of 68%. Stephen Warnock’s total tackle sucess rate is an impressive 61%. Stephen Warnock has made 47 interceptions this season compared to last seasons total of 53 and has Warnock has only incurred 1 defensive error to date.
Stephen Warnock has been able to bomb down the wing and attack opposition and has managed to dribble past 17 players so far this season and this has resulted in Warnock to get 34 crosses. However he has only delivered 6 accurate crosses resulting in a percentage of 18% (which is down from last season’s 27%). With Stephen Warnock’s attacking attributes Aston Villa have been the benefactor of 3 goal assists and 7 chances created from open play (over 12 chances/assists which is more than last year).
