Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Manchester City – Champions League Preview

Manchester City travel to Germany to face Borussia Mönchengladbach in round two of the UEFA Champions League at Borussia Park. Having lost the first game, both teams would be looking to get that first win on the board to keep up with leaders Sevilla and second placed Juventus. City have been struggling for form recently, having lost three of their last four games in all competitions; more recently the embarrassing 4-1 away defeat at Spurs. Mönchengladbach turned on the style at the weekend, beating Stuttgart 3-1 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. City will be desperate for a win to keep their hopes alive. Mönchengladbach have had a change of their manager as Andre Schubert took charge of the German club, helping them to two successive wins after a run of six defeats in a row.

The change of manager means nothing, I’ve always said that Champions League games are special; you have to give respect to your rival and it doesn’t matter that they are not in their best moment. We have to think only about ourselves
and taking three points from this game – that’s the most important thing. It is
very important for us to climb the table and come back from Germany with a victory.

… insisted City’s new signing Nicolas Otamendi.

TEAM NEWS

BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH

Gladbach will be without the services of captain and experienced centre-back Martin Stranzl as the Austrian is recovering from a fractured eye socket. There are no more injury worries for caretaker manager Andre Schubert, who will be able to call upon the likes of Fabian Johnson, Patrick Herrmann and Alvaro Dominguez after their recent return from injury lay-offs.

MANCHESTER CITY

City could be without their captain Vincent Kompany as well as defenders Elaquim Mangala and Gael Clichy, forward Wilfried Bony and midfielders Yaya Toure and Fabian Delph. David Silva resumed training this week but he is expected only to be fit to make the bench.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • No English club has ever beaten Gladbach in the German team’s own stadium (D 1, L 4). In fact, Gladbach have won their last four home games against English teams in European competition.
  • Only one of City’s 14 Champions League games away from home has ended in a draw (2-2 v CSKA Moscow last season).
  • Sergio Aguero has scored 14 goals in his last 14 starts with Manchester City in the Champions League.
  • Gladbach have scored in each of their last 15 home games in European competition.

KEY MEN

Patrick Hermann – Borussia Mönchengladbach

Gladbach’s players are a no match for City’s plethora of world class talent. Any hope of a win would solely depend on counter attacking game as the pacy Patrick Hermann could be the key man for Gladbach.

Kevin de Bruyne – Manchester City

De Bruyne has quickly made himself City’s top goalscorer with three goals in his three starts since a £54.5million move from Wolfsburg. He has also started to knock on the door of the elite handful of truly world-class City stars, in a short space of time. In his three starts, he was man of the match against West Ham and Sunderland, and scored the opening goal at Spurs before – like the rest of the team – fading from view. After a shocker against Spurs with their goal, de Bruyne’s and City’s moment could be at Borussia Park as they look to get the first win on the board in their Champions League season.

PREDICTION

This game could be one of those game for City where they might struggle but get the job done at the end of the night if they play their cards right.

Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-3 Manchester City.
