The Longest Unbeaten Runs In Football

A string of wins is always impressive especially with the modern game of football moving as fast and as competitive as ever before. When you’re facing tough opponents on the pitch both home and away each and every week the season can be long and demanding for everyone involved not least for the fans who have difficulty with their Premier League accumulator tips each week! So when you’re notching up a seemingly unbeatable run every game becomes a battle and here are just some of those teams that have reached great heights of footballing invincibility.

Arsenal

ARSENAL – 49 games

Between May 2003 and October 2004 Gunners manager Arsene Wenger led his side to an unbeaten run of 49 games, which is still the longest run in Premier League history. Their record-breaking run eventually came to an end by defeat at the hands of Manchester United. Arsenal lost 2-0 away at Old Trafford in a temper fuelled game filled with controversial and contentious moments. Tempers boiled over after the match as the teams headed down the tunnel which included a rather amusing incident that involved a pizza being hurled at Man U manager Alex Ferguson by an unidentified Arsenal player.

BAYERN MUNICH – 53 games

One of the most recent winning runs on record was for German side Bayern Munich. During their successful back to back seasons from 2012-2014 they managed to go on a 53 game run which helped them to take the Bundesliga title and by a clear 25 points over any of their nearest league competitors, not too surprising for a club whose home stadium is regarded as one of the most feared in the world. Of course they also managed to win just about everything else going as well. Bavarian-based team Augsburg were responsible to ending their triumphant string of victories.

CELTIC – 62 games

Glasgow-based club Celtic didn’t let a little thing like the First World War get in the way of their prominent unbeaten run between 1915 and 1917. They made it straight into the record books with their 62 game run and this even included on occasion playing in 2 games on the very same day. Alec ‘The Icicle’ McNair was a notable driving force for the impenetrable Celtic side to notch up win after win, and went on to make more than 600 appearances for the club. Their string of victories finally ended in the spring of 2017.

FC STEAUA BUCUREȘTI – 104 games

While everyone else was preoccupied with listening to Flock of Seagulls, puzzling over the Rubik’s cube and enjoying some classic arcade gaming with Pac Man the 1980’s also marked an incredible achievement for Romanian side Steaua Bucureşti. From 1986 to 1989 they managed to notch up an impressive unbeaten run of 104 games. So impressive that it is still to this day the longest unbeaten run in modern footballing history.
