Aaron Ramsey – Pivotal to Arsenal’s Title Hopes?

Aaron Ramsey has perhaps the biggest six months ahead of him, with his side fighting for the league title and his country going to their first major tournament since 1958. He has been moved back into his favoured central role, and has looked like a real asset in recent weeks. The injuries to Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin have left the club weakened centrally, but the re-emergence of the Welshman in the centre has been a positive, as he is good on the ball and a goal threat. If he stays fit, then he will be an important player for the club.

He began the season on the wing and he missed a few games as well. Arsene Wenger will be hoping he stays fit and his form continues as he makes excellent runs in the final third and he can go undetected with defences focusing on Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez. The top clubs this season haven’t had a proven goalscorer from midfield and Ramsey could easily score upwards of ten goals if he continues to play with the attacking freedom he has at the moment.

Arsenal have had a lot of attacking injuries, which has allowed the Welshman to become a bigger part of the attack. He is playing as part of the midfield axis with Mathieu Flamini with Ramsey given the licence to move beyond the attacking midfielders. Against Manchester City, he stood out against a talented midfield, with his defensive work also being impressive. He could have secured the points late on after an excellent run saw him get in behind the Manchester City defence. His finish wasn’t great, but it highlighted the worth that Ramsey has for his side and sometimes the lack of movement in attack has been a criticism attached to Arsene Wenger’s side.

The central midfielder has scored three times and has one assist to his name. I expect those figures to increase given Ramsey’s new freedom in the side. He hit double figures in the 2013/14 season, which was his breakout year. He hasn’t found the same form since. However, with the Euros on the horizon, the motivation is there for the Welshman to have a strong finish to the season. His confidence will be sky high going into the tournament if he helps his club side to their first league title since the 2003-4 season.

He is still only 24 and he is developing into a top quality player at the same rate as his club is developing into one of Europe’s top clubs. He is perfect for Arsenal’s system as he is a quality passer of the ball and his reading of the attacking play allows him to find space to score goals. Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud are the star names of the Arsenal attack and will take all the attention. This is why I think Ramsey could be key to Arsenal’s title hopes as he can win games when the big players are injured or have a poor game. He adds an extra edge to the Gunners’ attack and their dynamic movement in the final third with five or six players makes them favourites for the title going into Christmas.
