Tottenham & Arsenal – Title Races or Trophies in London?

Tottenham’s title hopes were delivered a big blow when they were unable to overcome a battling West Brom side at White Hart Lane last Monday. Leicester will lift the Premier League Spurs lose to Chelsea tonight and despite an impressive season under Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs could walk away with nothing.

But it depends on how you define ‘nothing’ in footballing achievements. In today’s game, trophies and winning silverware has become an acknowledgment of success and anything else is usually under-rated or forgotten. Tottenham’s performances this season have been inspiring and entertaining for all fans and their place in the race for the title has been fully deserved. However, ending the season with nothing to show for it in the trophy cabinet will be disappointing for fans and although there’s been much individual success within the team, their progress won’t count for much if they don’t go searching for trophies next season.

Arsenal fans know all too well the feeling of an anti-climax and have become accustomed to their side falling at the final hurdle. Before Arsenal’s FA Cup victory over Hull City in 2014, it had been nine years since they last lifted a trophy despite competing in the Champions League for nine consecutive seasons. That record has extended to 11 years and they’ve still only notched up two FA Cup trophies.

Arsenal have become infamous amongst Premier League fans for ‘collapsing’ after New Year despite going into the Christmas period at the top of the table. Since 2010, Arsenal have been top of the table for more than four weeks during two of the last five seasons and have headed into the festive period, being on top at least once during the month of December on three occasions. Arsene Wenger has achieved great success throughout his time at the club, including the formation of the ‘Invincibles’ team, which went unbeaten on their way to Premier League glory in 2004. Arsenal have competed for the title and fallen short for the last decade and although they’re consistently a top four team, they’re never seen as a threat in Europe either. Although both London clubs have now experienced a title race, many fans would swap that for a trophy.

Tottenham’s achievements this season have been reflected in the team’s individual player accolades. Deli Alli capped off an astonishing campaign in which he made his international debut, by becoming the PFA Young Player of the Year, beating team-mate Harry Kane to the award. Kane is very much still in the running for the Golden Boot award, competing with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, battling it out to become the Premier League’s top goal-scorer. Kane was a front runner for the PFA Player of the Year award too but was pipped to the prize by Riyad Mahrez but the Tottenham man still had a place in the Team of the Year, alongside team-mates Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Deli Alli.

Whilst these achievements have deservedly been celebrated, Tottenham will probably finish the season empty handed after failing to progress in cup competitions or make a mark in Europe. And as Arsenal fans will admit, being in a title race is far less satisfying than winning a trophy when you end the season consistently empty handed. This could prove to be an important summer for Tottenham, who like their London rivals, need to find something extra in order to progress to league glory. If not, their achievements this season will quickly be forgotten.
