Best time to bet on the EPL, start, middle or end of season

As the 2015-2016 EPL season draws to a close, and as Leicester celebrate their remarkable feat, we have again been reminded of just how much of a miracle it is to predict the winner of the world’s most prestigious football competition.

It’s almost as difficult as if you visited 50Stars Casino one day, then Carnival Casino the next day, and Casino Las Vegas the third day, and if you won at every single spin and at every roll of the dice. For more mobile casinos visit Pure Playtech and see whether you’ll be able to do the equivalent of those punters who predicted Leicester City to win the EPL title and are now proud millionaires.

If you are honest, you’ll probably admit to yourself that when the season started, you, just like everyone else thought that Manchester City was probably going to win the league. They started the season emphatically and swept aside every opposition team that faced them in the first handful of games.

However, thirty-something games later, and Manchester City are on the brink of dropping out of the Champions League places, and their premature arrangement with Pep Guardiola seems to have backfired on them. They looked like a team of Sunday footballers against Real Madrid, and their display against Arsenal this weekend was anything, but spectacular. In fact, should Manchester United win their remaining two fixtures, their city rivals will definitely be playing on Thursdays in Europe next year.

Just like with the Citizens, everyone probably thought at the start of the season that Chelsea were going to quickly snap out of, what Mourinho called the ‘bad moment’, and that they were going to compete for the title just like every other year. Several months later however, Mourinho was shown the exit door at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were battling relegation, and their championship winning team looked like a band of misfits who have never met each other.

In similar fashion, both Arsenal and Spurs have had promising starts to their seasons, but as recent results have shown, both London clubs have failed to perform at the crucial parts of the season when it mattered most. Ultimately, they paid the price for their lack of consistency.

Based on the previous examples it seems that the start of the season is not much to go by. In fact, teams like West Ham and Southampton which haven’t had the best of starts have managed to turn their seasons around and now are very likely to be appearing in Europe next year.

The middle of the season in the EPL is actually the Christmas period. This is when teams in the UK are playing several games in a matter of days and, according to Sir Alex Ferguson, this was the period that won him all those titles. In fact, whenever the Red Devils were top after the hectic Christmas period, everyone knew that they were likely the new champions.

The days around Boxing Day are also the days when Arsene Wenger physically challenged squad suffers tons of injuries and basically losses all hope of a title challenge and when Liverpool’s fans, who always like to say that this will probably be their year, come to terms with the fact that a top 6 finish is what they can hope for.

The same cannot be said about Chelsea. They have always been able to make a strong start of the season (except for this one obviously) and if they were first after Christmas, just like in the case of United, it would have been considered a safe bet to put your house down on them winning the title at the end of the season.

November, and not so much December, has always been a crucial moth for the West London club. In fact, if Chelsea successfully got through their jinxed month of November, when managers like Scolari, Andre Villas Boas and even the beloved Di Matteo started losing the plot, then they were likely to be top of the league come May.

The end of the season is never a good period to bet on the EPL, since most of the final positions have already been determined and the odds are pretty low. This year for example, everyone thought that Tottenham might challenge Leicester for the title, but the Foxes have already been too far ahead for anyone to catch up with them.

While we are talking about Leicester, it is important to note that they were also first after Christmas this year and just like with the other ‘Christmas champions’ in seasons past, they have managed to clinch the title quite easily. They kept their momentum going, scored goals like these, never doubted their ability when everyone else was expecting them to fail at the next hurdle, and comfortably won the league with half of their squad chosen in the team of the season.

In conclusion, it seems that the make or break period for teams in the EPL is the end of December and the start of the New Year. This is when the wheat is separated from the chaff and when the men are separated from the boys.

So if the team that you are planning to back is first after Christmas, then wait no further and put your savings on them to win the league. Who knows, you might be as lucky as those few people who backed Leicester to be champions this season and are now enjoying their winnings.
