5 Free Agents Premier League Clubs Need to Target

With the upcoming Euro’s in France, the transition from this season to the next will not be so tough but the summer transfer window makes things all the better as clubs with new managers or old, look to make changes and add reinforcements to their squads.

There are plenty of extremely talented players available for free and the shrewd clubs could be able to do great business for the summer by snapping up these out-of-contract players.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The 34-year-old leaves PSG a legend after having won everything multiple times, bar the Champions League, with the club. Ibra is reportedly close to being acquired by Manchester United and boss-in-waiting Jose Mourinho. While some may argue that it would be stupid for United to base their entire attack around him as he has thrived when that has been done, the Red Devils have missed a showman, a proper character, that mercurial talent for sometime now.

Whoever lands him will have to pay a crazy amount in wages to the player but at least they don’t have to pay a penny to PSG.

Spain, Italy, France has seen Zlatan’s magic. England could soon be on their way!

Nicolas N’Koulou

The Cameroonian is out of contract as he finished a disappointing season with Marseille. N’Koulou is a powerful and strong centre-back to have in a team and getting him for free would be a massive bonus. Perhaps Klopp might want to try the international partnership of N’Koulou and Matip at the club. Liverpool desperately need strong centre backs with Skrtel set to leave and Kolo Toure also out of contract. It wasn’t a very good season N’Koulou, much like most of his teammates, but the player has shown that he has the talent. He’s 26 which is young-ish for a defender. Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with the player who will definitely leave the fallen giants behind this summer.

Victor Valdes

Frozen out at Manchester United by Louis van Gaal, it is inevitable that the ex-Barcelona goalkeeper will want to move on in the summer. Jose Mourinho will know Valdes from his Spain days but with Romero there, Valdes will continue to be third choice even if he stays on which seems unlikely.

The 34-year-old’s talent cannot be disputed and he has won everything in his career. Clubs should certainly look to bring him in simply because of the sheer experience he possesses. What a massive bonus it will be to have a figure like him around young players. Moreover, Valdes might still have a good couple of seasons under his belt. Premier League’s mid-table sides or the newly promoted ones might want to add him to their ranks. It shouldn’t hurt his pride as he will get to play and having already won all there is to win, this would be a great new challenge.

Darijo Srna

The full-back position is one almost every club will be looking at in the coming window. Only a few clubs have the ability to say they don’t need any addition or reinforcement in that spot.

Darijo Srna old has massive experience under his belt, having played over 700 matches in his career. Srna has spent 13 years with Shakhtar but is out of contract with the Ukrainian club this summer. The right-back is known to be able to play anywhere on the flank, even as a winger or wide forward if need be, and has deadly free kick taking abilities. The “icon of Shakhtar” has declined the likes of Chelsea due to his affinity and loyalty for Shakhtar, for whom he’s the most capped player.

The 34-year-old’s contract runs out in June and clubs would be aware of the possibility of landing such an experienced figurehead on a free transfer, who could still have another season of rigorous top flight football in him.

Andrija Zivkovic

The talent Serbia produces these days is really something and it is only a matter of time before the country makes serious strides in international football. 19-year-old Zivkovic played for Partizan Belgrade but is out of contract in June. The forward’s speed and skill make him a nightmare to defend against. He is also great at taking freekicks. He made huge strides for the club last season. He has already got 3 caps for the national team

At a time when young talented players go for astonishing amounts and clubs are willing to pay for the potential, it would be a massive coup for any club who can land a player who is genuinely interested in game time and not just the level of the club, on a free transfer. Chelsea and Manchester City have been linked with the player in the past but it seems Benfica are likely to land him especially since they’re rumored to be selling Gaitan to Atletico Madrid. Zivkovic has expressed his desire to join the Portuguese supergiants in the past as well.

  1. Zivkovic would struggle to get the work permit that is required to play in the BPL, owing to the stringent policy.
Darijo Srna, while interesting, would prove very costly for a player aged 34 y/o, reason – He doesn’t have much left to offer the ‘Big 6’, and the other mid-table clubs would find it hard to afford him on the payroll.
A more interesting option would be Caner Erkin, deputizes for Fenerbahce at LFB.
