Could Brahimi be heading to join Klopp’s revolution?

Jurgen Klopp is looking to get a lot of business done early to ensure his squad gets a full pre season together. His style of play centred on gegenpressing needs to be worked on heavily, with Liverpool set to be having double and triple training sessions this pre season. It is imperative to the German that his priority targets are secured as quickly as possible, which has already been seen with the captures of Joel Matip, Marko Grujic and Loris Karius. There are still a few positions to strengthen and we can expect some big money moves from Liverpool in the coming weeks. Yacine Brahimi has been linked with the club and he would be an exciting capture.

Brahimi is an Algerian winger, who plays for FC Porto, and although he isn’t world renowned, he is forging a reputation in Europe. At the age of 26, he is approaching the peak of his career and he could be the perfect winger for Klopp’s system. There are questions about his mentality and Klopp will need to ensure that Brahimi channels his talent in the right way, as he can be very inconsistent. He is sometimes selfish, and puts his own aims ahead of the side, which is a trait he will need to lose if he is to succeed in a Jurgen Klopp side.

He is an exceptional dribbler, capable of twisting defenders inside out. Brahimi prefers to dribble on the inside and attack the box, while his close control and ability to play neat interchanges with team-mates make him perfect for Klopp’s intricate and dynamic attacking philosophy. During the 2013/14 La Liga season, Brahimi was the most successful dribbler in the league, with 164, higher than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, which highlights his undoubted ability.

He has contributed greatly to the Porto attack, arguably becoming their most dangerous attacker since joining the club. He has scored 21 goals in 85 games for the club, including a Champions League hat-trick against BATE Borisov. This season hasn’t been as good, and Porto have been disappointing, with Brahimi also struggling. There will be some sections of the support that will want to cash in on their inconsistent Algerian, especially if the figures involved are to be believed. Liverpool could be willing to pay his release clause of £45m according to reports.

There is no doubt that Yacine Brahimi is a very talented player and one that is approaching the peak of his career. He has struggled to have a consistent run of good seasons, but under the right manager, he may be able to channel his talent on a regular basis. Jurgen Klopp will know that Brahimi has the potential to improve his attack, while he suits his system better than the current options in the squad. There will be concerns about his drop off this season and if the reports are true about the funds Liverpool are willing to invest in the Algerian, he will need to start next season with a bang.
