Cout off guard – Liverpool and the Problems of Old

What promised to be a new era for Liverpool football club, ended up as the beginning of a new error in what has been depressing deja vu of sorts. Liverpool on the brink of another European adventure …Talks of a war chest to rival the elite had supporters licking their lips in anticipation. But, as is always the case with the Reds, a step to future success is always shortlived.

The Phillipe Coutinho bombshell caught everyone off guard. The so called ITK’s (In the know’s) didn’t know what hit them, and they were exposed for the charlatans they really are. Fans were left first in a state of denial, then shock, and finally despair. The little magician who seemed so settled in Merseyside had just woken up one morning and decided he wanted out. If the news of him wanting to join Barcelona itself wasn’t bad enough, the timing of it all was what really hurt the Anfield faithful the most. So close to the window closing with hardly enough time to find a replacement, that too in a season where Liverpool were meant to make a mark in Europe again. Its almost carbon copy of the time when Suarez decided to leave for Catalonia, and the Reds basically ended up just making up the numbers in a group they were expected to qualify in.

In recent weeks, following the failed transfers of Naby Keita and Virgil Van Dijk, Jurgen Klopp had been doubling up as Public Relations Officer putting out all the fires. Questions had been asked of his thin and mostly inadequate squad surely unable to compete domestically and in Europe.

While most knew that the Reds’ defence is possibly the worst in the entire league, he kept saying that he is happy with what he had at his disposal, acting as if he had seen enough improvement to resurrect belief and trust in his players. But now with a key component of Liverpool’s “score more than we concede” gameplan wanting out, his tone has markedly changed. Not only is he reportedly adamant that he wants the Brazilian sold now since the transfer request, he has also allegedly run into a brick wall with Liverpool owners FSG wanting to keep the now unsettled player.

Seems like a no-win situation for Klopp currently, and supporters would be completely crushed if Ze German had to walk away from Anfield.

He is the best thing that has happened to the Red side of Merseyside in a long time.

Liverpool are in crisis mode and the season has only begun. A few new signings and all could yet be salvaged. The blunt reality is that supporters will lose another fan favourite and a new star will emerge hoping to impress Barcelona or Real Madrid through the famous Red Jersey over the course of the next few years. That’s just the way it goes.

True and lasting improvement will be the day Liverpool becomes the final destination instead of catalysts to Catalonia.
