Can Pellegrino’s Saints Frustrate Anfield Once Again?

Southampton have proven tricky customers for Liverpool in recent history.

It is almost two-years since Divock Origi inspired a 1-6 League Cup win for Liverpool, but since then the Saints have had the edge over the Merseyside outfit.

Southampton have won three out of the last five meetings, drawing the other two.

Virgil Van Dijk was linked heavily with a move to Anfield in the summer, but the centre-half will be doing all in his powers to stop a Liverpool attack that can be irrestistible on its day.

It is these types of games that have sparked question marks over Liverpool’s credentials in the past.

Time after time, teams who you would expect the reds to run-out winners against, they haven’t.

It is hard to put your finger on why an attack that looks like it can blaze four past anyone on their day, can sometimes be nullified by mid-table Premier League defences.

Make no mistake, this is a big game for Liverpool on Saturday.

Southampton will come with a plan, they will try to stifle the hosts with the knowledge in the back of their minds that they have done on previous occasions.

Pellegrino’s men are well organised, but they aren’t in the richest vein of form and Jurgen Klopp’s men should go into this game and show no degree of mercy.

An early goal is crucial in these games and the longer the score stays at 0-0, the more frustrating it gets for the home side and the more it encourages the visitors.

Manchester City travel to Leicester, which isn’t the easiest of trips despite the Blues’ inspired run of form.

Arsenal welcome Tottenham in the North London derby, so Liverpool will have the chance to either close in on Spurs, or open a gap from Arsenal.

Conte’s Chelsea have an always-tricky trip to West Brom.

Sadio Mane’s fitness is hanging in the balance ahead of Saturday’s clash with his former side.

In years gone people wouldn’t have faith in Liverpool going into this one, but they’ve found the net ten times in their last three, and conceded just once.

Despite the free-scoring run that his side are on, you’d still imagine that Jurgen Klopp will not be 100% confident of the outcome come 5pm, Saturday evening.
