Can Wayne Rooney Become Everton’s Season Saviour?

Wayne Rooney made a welcomed return to his boyhood club last summer, as he left Manchester United after over a decade-long service to arrive back with Everton.

The now 32-year-old spent an incredibly successful 13 years at Old Trafford, as he eventually broke many club records and won an abundance of trophies during his spell there. He broke the side’s all-time goals record previously held by the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton, as he struck an impressive 253 times in red.

Rooney also overtook Charlton’s all-time record at international level, as he racked up 53 goals in his 119 appearances. While he was achieving that for his country, the Liverpool-born forward also clinched 16 major honours with Man Utd, including five Premier League titles, the FA Cup and that famous Champions League crown back in 2008.

After a distinguished career with the Red Devils, it’s now back to Everton, where Rooney began his club career as a teenager. At Goodison Park, he was hoping to enjoy a successful return to familiar surroundings but the Toffees have so far struggled throughout the current Premier League campaign.

Sam Allardyce is now the man in charge on the blue half of Merseyside, having been called upon and signing an 18-month contract at the club in the hope of overturning form and fortunes. The former short-term England manager has already seen the best of Rooney during his short reign, with the latter striker having netted a hat-trick in a decisive clash against London outfit West Ham United.

Following their recent victory over the Hammers, in which Rooney starred in a 4-0 triumph domestically, Everton are seen as outside 28/1 in the Premier League betting to face a daunting drop down divisions come next May.

Rooney clearly still has the skills and attacking instincts capable of helping his current club and new boss Allardyce overturn their previous poor run of form, but he will need to maintain his clinical form for the long-term.

The Toffees academy graduate is the second highest scorer in Premier League history, too, and Everton will need to call upon all of their striker’s experience in order to get out of the rut they have dug themselves into under former coach Ronald Koeman.

Former club defender David Unsworth had a temporary spell in charge but new man at the helm Allardyce will be hopeful of getting things turned around with an in-form Rooney within his ranks. Rooney has racked up eight goals on all fronts so far this term for his boyhood side, including that impressive treble against West Ham on home territory.

Among those goals was a potential strike of the season, as Rooney beat his former international teammate Joe Hart from his own half with a sensational effort. It’s not the first time that he has managed to do so, but Everton will hope that he can continue to fire in the goals in what has been a turbulent campaign so far.
