Are Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard ready to manage in the Premier League?

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are considered icons of their respective clubs, Chelsea and Liverpool. Ask almost any supporter of those two English Premier League powerhouses and they will claim the legends should have the chance to manage their former club one day. This season Liverpool really impressed everyone and now the team is on the Champions League final against   Tottenham Hotspur. The 2018-19 season saw both Lampard and Gerrard enter the coaching profession. Both have had success with Lampard arguably having the best results of the duo. With the Premier League offseason now commencing, questions will be raised over whether a top-flight club will give one, or both, of the managers a chance to manage a team.

Frank Lampard and Derby County

Lampard could still find himself managing in the Premier League with Derby County next season. The Rams overturned a deficit to Leeds United in the Championship Playoffs to reach the final at Wembley Stadium against Aston Villa. It was a dramatic 4-3 aggregate win with Lampard masterminding the team’s performance at Elland Road.

While Derby County did qualify to the Championship Playoff Final, it may cause some to ignore that Derby County were technically better in goals scored, goals allowed and points the previous season. Before Lampard, Derby County scored 69 goals, allowed 48 goals, and obtained 75 points. Under Lampard, the Rams scored 69 times, conceded 54 goals, and tallied 74 points. Of course, those numbers aren’t very different, so Lampard’s work was on par with Gary Rowett the prior term.

It isn’t just Lampard’s management that has made Derby County good this season. The ex-Chelsea man has built a strong bond with his players that has helped Derby County’s performances on the pitch.

Lampard could get Premier League managerial opportunities before long, even if Derby County do not win the Championship Final. Would it be at Chelsea? It could be a mistake to take the position so early on in his coaching career.

Steven Gerrard and Rangers

Gerrard led Rangers to their best Scottish Premiership finish since returning to the top-flight. Rangers finished second this season nine points behind Celtic. Prior to Gerrard’s arrival, Rangers best finish in the Scottish Premiership was third with miles between them at their Glasgow rivals.

Gerrard’s opportunity to coach at former club Liverpool seems very far away. Liverpool have one of the best managers in football at the helm currently in Jurgen Klopp. The German has led Liverpool to three European Cup finals in less than four seasons in charge. The Reds are also coming off of a tremendous season in which they nearly won the Premier League title. At this point, Gerrard would feel like three steps backwards in management.

Gerrard may need to work in the Championship before making the step to the Premier League. Although he has Europa League experience and a year under his belt in the Scottish Premiership, Premier League clubs could be worried about the talent Gerrard has managed against.

Both Lampard and Gerrard have a future in the Premier League as managers. Right now, Lampard looks more likely to get a shot at coaching Chelsea, or another club, before Gerrard has an opportunity to make the step up. One day the two rivals that could meet on opposing benches as the future of Premier League management.
