Chelsea will never have a better opportunity to appoint Frank Lampard as manager

Maurizio Sarri has now left Chelsea, which leaves a vacant manager’s role at the club. There only appears to be one candidate with Frank Lampard the overwhelming favourite for the post. It represents a huge risk for the Blues, but taking their current situation into account, it could be the perfect time to bring a club legend back to the club.

Chelsea are unable to sign players for the next two transfer windows, after being given a transfer ban last season. They did think they would be able to appeal against the decision, but that was turned down. This leaves the club in a vulnerable position, especially after the sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid. In a top-heavy division like the Premier League, they will struggle to reach the heights we have become accustomed to. A title challenge seems impossible at the time of writing.

However, an appointment of Lampard could breathe fresh life into the club and supporters alike. It could even be the perfect move to bring the two back together. There has been a negative atmosphere around the club for the majority of Sarri’s reign and this would bring genuine excitement back to Stamford Bridge.

Those criticising the potential move, due to Lampard’s lack of experience do have a fair point. The 40-year-old has only one year of managerial experience and that came in the Championship. That said, he fared well and helped Derby County to the play-off final. He couldn’t have come closer to promotion. Over the course of the season, he developed a lot as a manager. He learned to be less bold in his style to get the best of his players. The transformation of Richard Keogh from an error-prone centre-half to an integral leader showed the qualities that Lampard possesses as a coach.

The main benefit of hiring Lampard is his desire to bring young players through to the first team. In fact, Chelsea have already benefitted from this with both Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori being given prominent roles in his Derby County team. The Blues have always been praised for their impressive academy, but they will now have to use it. This appointment would provide hope for this already at the club.

The two players mentioned above and Callum Hudson-Odoi would likely be given lots of time in the first team. The England international winger could even be considered the replacement for Hazard. Although he may not be at the Belgian’s level yet, he has the potential to grow into a very good player and he needs to be given the opportunity to do so.

Chelsea are approaching a season where little is expected. A top-six finish could provide a platform to build on for Lampard, heading into next summer when the club will be able to sign players again. This is the perfect opportunity for the Blues to take a gamble on one of the greatest players in their history. If his managerial reign is even half as good, it will be a decision that is vindicated.
