Premier League Matchday 37 Preview

The penultimate round of the 2020/21 Premier League season gets underway on Tuesday with a set of four fixtures, with the remaining six taking place on Wednesday.

Without further ado, let’s take a quick look at the matches.

Tuesday

Manchester United – Fulham

Manchester United go up against a Fulham side they have not lost to in any of their last 12 Premier League meetings (W10, D2) for their final game at Old Trafford this season.

After losing back-to-back league games on home turf, the Red Devils could succumb to three defeats in a row for the first time since 1979. It’s more likely, however, that they will secure a second-placed finish with a win.

Southampton – Leeds United

The two sides that have had identical returns from their last three Premier League matches (W2, L1) will meet at St Mary’s Stadium as Southampton take on Leeds.

Following a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in late February, the Whites are looking to claim their first league double over the Saints since the 2005/06 Championship season.

Brighton & Hove Albion – Manchester City

Man City head to the Amex Stadium, looking to maintain their 100% Premier League record against Brighton.

The newly-crowned Premier League champions have come out victorious in all of their seven top-flight encounters by an aggregate score of 21-2, including a narrow 1-0 triumph in the reverse fixture at the Etihad.

Chelsea – Leicester City

Champions League football is at stake as Chelsea and Leicester go toe-to-toe at Stamford Bridge in one of the most exciting match-ups of the penultimate round.

The Blues have failed to win any of their last six league matches against the King Power outfit (D4, L2) since a 2-1 away victory in September 2017 under Antonio Conte.

Wednesday

Everton – Wolverhamtpon Wanderers

Coming off the back of a disappointing weekend for both teams, Everton and Wolves look to bounce back at Goodison Park.

Seven of the last eight Premier League meetings between these two teams have featured three or more goals.

Newcastle United – Sheffield United

Sheffield’s first Premier League win of the season came against Newcastle as they now look to do their first league double over the Magpies since 1978/79.

A 1-0 away triumph at Everton last time out means the Blades could post consecutive Premier League wins for the first time this term.

Tottenham Hotspur – Aston Villa

Tottenham are seeking their sixth consecutive Premier League win over Villa, having netted twice or more in each of their last five top-flight duels.

Although the Champions League ship has sailed long ago, the Spurs can all but secure a place in the next season’s Europa League group stage with a victory here.

Crystal Palace – Arsenal

Selhurst Park is the venue as Palace and Arsenal lock horns in an all-London Premier League fixture.

Given the Gunners’ performances in the post-Arsene Wenger era, it comes as no surprise that they have failed to beat the Eagles in any of their last five league matches (D4, L1).

Burnley – Liverpool

Seeking revenge for a 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture that ended their 68-game unbeaten Premier League streak at Anfield, Liverpool travel to Turf Moor to tackle Burnley.

It is ‘do or die’ for the dethroned champions following Alisson Becker’s heroics at The Hawthorns on Sunday, as they have a genuine opportunity to break into the top-four this midweek.

West Bromwich Albion – West Ham United

WBA’s final Premier League home game pits them against David Moyes’ West Ham side that have won just once in their last five league outings (D1, L3).

Their 2-1 win at the London Stadium means the Hammers can post their first league double over the Baggies since 2005/06.
