Which Industries Sponsor Premier League Teams The Most?

The Premier League is one of the biggest events in all of football. The event sees 20 football teams from across the country compete against each other. Each of these football clubs are sponsored by different companies, and we thought we’d take a look at which industries sponsor Premier League teams the most.

English Premier League Sponsors Right Now

Taking a look at the sponsors of the 20 clubs competing in the English Premier League 2021/22 season, you’ll find that they’re mostly sponsored by the gambling industry. A majority of the clubs have gambling firms as their main shirt sponsors, including Burnley, Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Southampton, Watford, West Ham United, and the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The second most common industry sponsoring Premier League 2021/22 clubs is financial, with clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur having finance-based companies sponsoring their shirts. The remainder clubs are sponsored by a mix of companies from the automotive, technology, and travel industries.

The Most Common Industry Sponsors

The most common industry sponsor for the Premier League 2021/22 season is the gambling industry. Gambling has been an important sponsor of the Premier League for several years now, with many big-name gambling and casino brands along with their sister sites sponsoring entire football clubs or parts of their football kits.

Other common industries that have sponsored clubs in the Premier League include financial services, travel, and the automotive industries. While these aren’t as common as sponsorships from the gambling industry, they still pop up frequently and are generally longer-lasting than most gambling sponsorships.

What’s more, although gambling is the most common sponsor, the longest-running sponsorship of a Premier League club was between Carlsberg and Liverpool. Under the 18-year partnership, Carlsberg acted as the club’s main sponsor before being named as their official beer partner.

Will Premier League Clubs Move Away From Gambling Sponsorships?

As you can see, gambling is a very prominent football sponsor both inside and outside of the Premier League, but many campaigners, politicians, and members of the general public have expressed concern over football’s close relationship with gambling, suggesting that these tight deals have encouraged and exposed vulnerable people to gambling.

The UK Government is currently in the midst of its review of the Gambling Act 2005, and the outcome could lead to a ban on gambling shirt sponsorships in sport. This could force Premier League clubs to look elsewhere for sponsorships and lead other industries to take over from gambling as the Premier League’s most common sponsors.

Why Are Sponsorships Important In Football?

After reading all of this, you’re probably wondering why sponsorships are so prominent and important in football and other sports. Well, sponsorships help fund football teams and clubs, allowing them to continue playing. Sponsorships pay for club employees and players, funds their training, and in many cases can help fund and support local communities and supporters.

Sponsorships in sports also help the sponsor by promoting their brand via football kits, stadium advertising, and on the football clubs’ social media channels. All of this is incredibly important in football and in most other sports too. Without sponsorships in the Premier League and beyond, you probably wouldn’t be able to watch and cheer on your favourite team, so remember that when your favourite club announces their brand new sponsor.
