Southampton v Liverpool Preview | Predictions, Stats and Key Players

If Liverpool lose this game, then Manchester City will be confirmed as this season’s Premier League Champions. Southampton therefore hold a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of the competition that sees Liverpool needing to overcome a tough Saints side. This game comes just a few days after their 120 minutes exploits in the FA Cup Final, and a huge effort from Jurgen’s men will be needed to keep their quadruple hopes alive.

Southampton come into this game much like Aston Villa, with an unpredictable team that can either be tough, or timid. Their last time out saw them taken apart 3-0, away to Brentford. With safety assured in 15th place (and 40 points thus far), they have little but pride to play for. Fraser Forster should have recovered from a back injury, alongside Stuart Armstrong. Valentino Livramento remains injured, so Ralph Hasenhüttl may look to shuffle the pack.

Oriol Romeu will be looking to start, and Che Adams will also be hoping for a recall. The system may well shift from the 4-4-2 shape (that lost at Brentford), with a five man midfield deployed. With large stretches of defending inevitable, Ralph will surely be looking to counter, as with most other teams in the top division (when facing the reds).

Liverpool have some decisions to make, with two games remaining in their Premier League campaign. The injuries to Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho will see them all miss out. The midfield that ended the victorious FA Cup final will definitely need adjusting, and the likes of Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, James Milner and Curtis Jones, could all start. Up top will see Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino as real candidates for a selection, with game management needed in this must win game.

This will be a tense affair, unless Liverpool can capitalize early. A hard fought victory will be more than acceptable, but Klopp will be praying no more players join his worrying injury list.

In game that the reds must win, that will surely see them come through. With a large squad to rotate, all players will be hoping to impress before next week’s Champions League final.

Player to watch – Roberto Firmino

Score Prediction:

Southampton 0 – 3 Liverpool
