Brighton vs Tottenham Preview | Predictions, Stats and Key Players

Brighton play their first home match under Roberto De Zerbi, as they welcome Tottenham to the Amex Stadium. It will be the first meeting of two Italian coaches in the Premier League this season. The two managers have different styles of play, with the new Brighton boss being less typically Italian than Antonio Conte. There will be mutual respect between the pair though and it will be fascinating to see which style triumphs this weekend.

No Brighton supporter would have wanted to see Graham Potter leave the club, but the early indications are that their new head coach will oversee a similarly exciting era for the Seagulls. Last weekend, they traveled to Anfield with no fear and could feel unlucky only to take a point from the match. They created several clear cut chances and the early work done by De Zerbi was clear to all. There was freedom for the attacking players and they were creating overload all over the pitch. As they have been for a couple of years, they will prove a tricky test for any team. They should have plenty of confidence ahead of their match with Tottenham this weekend.

Spurs will be aware of the difficulties that a trip to the South Coast can bring. They have lost two of their last three away matches against Brighton in the Premier League. Meanwhile, they lost to the Seagulls in their previous meeting at home too. It has proven to be a tough fixture for Spurs in recent years and their supporters will be keen to see an improvement from their last two matches. They lost to Arsenal last weekend and could only draw in the Champions League. A strong performance and result is required to get their season back on a positive track.

Interesting stats

There has only been one draw in the last 17 meetings between these two sides.

Antonio Conte has never lost to Roberto De Zerbi, winning three times and drawing once.

Key men

Trossard

Since arriving in England, Leandro Trossard has been a key player for Brighton. However, he has failed to establish himself as one of the better players operating outside of the top six, due to his disappointing end product. He now looks to be producing the numbers to back up his performances with a hat-trick against Liverpool seeing him get plenty of plaudits. Trossard now has five goals and one assist in his first seven Premier League games. Even if he does slow down, he should be on for his best return in a Premier League season. His previous best was eight goals and three assists in 2021/22. The attacker has been involved in the Belgium national team and his performances will be giving Roberto Martinez food for thought ahead of the Euros. He will be the player that Tottenham are most concerned about on Saturday, as his movement could cause issues for their rigid defensive structure under Conte.

Kane

It has been a good start to the season for Harry Kane, even if his goal-scoring has been dwarfed by Erling Haaland. The Tottenham striker has seven goals to his name and continues to be the primary attacking threat for Antonio Conte, as the rest of the attacking cast compete for starting berths. During his career, he has scored eight times across all competitions against Brighton. There aren’t many teams he struggles against, but he will have fond memories of facing the Seagulls. The new brave approach from Brighton should result in Kane having space to operate in. When he is afforded space, he is a very dangerous player. The England captain will believe he can have a match-winning impact on the South Coast and return his team to winning ways.

Team news

Enock Mwepu is a doubt due to illness, but it is hoped he will be available. Jakub Moder is unavailable until 2023.

Emerson Royal is suspended following his red card in the North London derby. Djed Spence and Matt Doherty will be pushing to come in, but it could be Ivan Perisic that is shifted to the right. Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Moura and Japhet Tanganga are all expected to miss out.

Verdict

It is going to be an interesting contest, as it certainly represents a clash of attacking styles. Brighton will be the more attack minded team, while Tottenham will hope that they have space to exploit on the counter attack. Due to De Zerbi’s approach, goals should be expected at both ends. It could result in another entertaining draw for the Italian, which would represent another positive result against a Champions League side.
