Can Arsenal Win the League This Year?

It’s been a long time since the glory days of Wenger and The Invincibles but Arsenal are starting to look like challengers again. City dropped three important points to Brentford at the weekend, which saw Arsenal go five points clear and top of the table, where they will sit until at least after Christmas.

There’s been an attempt to play down any title talk by Arteta and Arsenal but 14 games in, twelve wins, one draw and one loss speaks for itself. Arsenal have to be considered challengers. Arteta’s Revolution

Arteta hasn’t had an easy job since taking over from Emery but piece by piece, he’s built this team in his image – with help from players like Saka and Martinelli also making a huge step up under the Spaniard.

He’s made some huge calls, making the young and influential Martin Odegaard his captain ahead of this season has proved to be an inspired move. He’s also revitalised the career of ex-captain, Granit Xhaka – who was stripped of the captaincy by predecessor Emery after clashing with the clubs fans.

A much-maligned character, he has weathered the storm and finds himself as one of Arsenal’s most important players in their charge for the title. For a man whose relationship with the club looked unsalvageable, this has been a big and important turnaround.

A Fresh Injection of Talent

Arteta has built a young squad whilst also bringing in some experienced winners like Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City. Both have looked at home straight away and form part of the new spine of this Arsenal team.

William Saliba, a player who cost Arsenal £27 million in 2019 has been brought in from the cold after being told he wasn’t prepared for the league and being sent on several loans.  He’s been one of the most impressive defenders in the league this season, making Arsenal fans all over wonder why it took so long for him to get a chance in the team.

Saliba was named as Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year and was awarded a position in the Team of the Year whilst on loan at Marseille. He’s formed a fierce partnership with the magnificent Gabriel who has taken yet another step up this season. Ben White, who was brought in for big money last season, also deserves a mention for his strong performances at right-back.

A New Identity

When Arteta joined Arsenal he spoke of creating an identity on the pitch, something Arsenal had been lacking for some time. After a difficult start in which he could have lost his job, it’s now clear what he meant.

This Arsenal look balanced, well drilled, fit and ready to fight for every point. There is a special feeling around the club now, this team knows they’re capable of going the distance.

The big question after Arsenal’s start to the season was could this team maintain their form consistently; they’re proving they can. Twelve victories and 37 points represents Arsenal’s best record 14 games into a season.

They are yet to face champions, Manchester City, but they have met the rest of the ‘big six’ rivals and come through the other side. Newcastle could represent a potential banana skin but there’s every bit of evidence this Arsenal team could dispatch of the Magpies as well.
