Aston Villa recorded their first home win at Villa Park since November with a 1-0 win against Fulham at the weekend, Villa had to work hard for their three points.
The game appeared to be resulting in a 0-0 draw until Andreas Weimann found the net after Gary Gardner’s shot was too hot to handle for the Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer. Weimann pounced on the rebound and fumbled it across the line at the second attempt in front of the Holte-End in the final minute of the 5 minutes of stoppage time.
Aston Villa fans were not expecting a great game or an opportunity to gain three points with Fulham coming off the back on 3 back-to-back wins leading to the game and Villa’s poor home form of late.
In recent weeks Aston Villa fans had become restless with a protest before their clash with Manchester City followed by two away trips to fellow league strugglers Wigan and Blackburn which were less than thrilling encounters. The later fixture was a better show but Aston Villa were kept out by an inform Paul Robinson who pulled off a hatful of saves to get a point for Rovers.
Aston Villa welcomed Fulham to Villa Park on Saturday and it was a frantic start from Aston Villa who looked up for the game and within the opening 23 minutes has 10 shots at goal. Over the course of the game Villa managed to get 14 attempts at the Fulham goal and were on-target on 6 occasions.
Aston Villa had majority of the possession in the first half creating many chances the best one of the first half fell for local lad Gabby Agbonlahor on the 16th minute mark. Marc Albrighton also came close to scoring early in the second half when his 20 yard shot bounced off Mark Schwarer’s crossbar.
