Jamie Carragher announces retirement from football | Carra Stats

As reported on the Liverpool FC website – Jamie Carragher has announced that he will be retiring from football at the end of the season. In his early career Jamie played in central midfield and even scored on his début against Aston Villa at Anfield in a 3-0 victory.

Jamie-CarragherUnder Gerard Houllier Jamie Carragher transitioned into a full-back and then finally Rafa Benitez converted Jamie to his current position as a central defender. A defender known for giving 100% Jamie Carragher never gave up and always fought for his side throughout his 496 Premier League appearances (over 700 in total). If you’re sat at Anfield you’d be able to hear Carra screaming instructions at his team mates – such were his qualities on the pitch – the captain even if he wasn’t wearing the armband.

On current form Jamie should reach 500 Premier League appearances easily this season, the first ever to do this for Liverpool FC and it’s an honour he’ll deserve. An unfortunate statistic for Carragher will be that he’d end on a -3 deficit in the goals column after scoring 5 for Liverpool but 8 own-goals against them!

His proudest moment on the pitch will undoubtedly be the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul where he fought for 120 minutes and especially that last half an hour onslaught from AC Milan – with countless blocks and challenges to force the game into a penalty shoot-out, which Liverpool famously won.

There’s plenty of football to be played yet – almost half of a season – and he doesn’t look like he’s finished yet. His last three performances have been his best for a while – he’s taken the first team spot away from Martin Skrtel and hopefully he’ll play a large part in moving Liverpool further up the Premier League table and maybe even go all the way in the Europa League to finish on a high?

We’ll save saying good bye for later…
