Daniel Sturridge has had an unbelievable start to his Liverpool career. With only 14 starts he has already amassed 13 goals and it doesn’t seem like he’s in the mood to stop scoring either. After the victory against Manchester United Sturridge revealed that he wasn’t 100% fit but was playing for the team. His interaction on the social media has also indicated the team ethos that Liverpool FC is employing at this moment regardless of the controversies of Luis Suarez.
Sturridge also became the first Liverpool player to score in the opening three games of the season since Robbie Fowler.
As you can see below Daniel Sturridge has been in sublime form since joining from Chelsea for £12m. Against Manchester United he showed a level of maturity in holding up the ball for Liverpool at periods in the second half where Liverpool required some breathing space. He’s scored against Manchester United twice in this calendar year and has also scored against former clubs Chelsea & Manchester City proving that he can play in the big games and with all sorts of records falling yesterday (first time Brendan Rodgers has beaten Manchester United & first his Liverpool side beat a team from the Top 4) Liverpool can be confident for the remainder of the season.
The stats above cannot really be compared as we’ve only got past 3 games this season – however it will be an interesting comparison once Christmas is upon us to see how Sturridge has faired in his first year at Anfield. If he continues to play the way he is he should have easily got past the 20 goal mark – a feat that Michael Owen didn’t even achieve in his time at Liverpool.
With players like Sakho, Cissokho, Illori, Allen, Moses & Suarez still to come into the first team squad this season Liverpool will hope to build on their solid start and try to push for a Champions League spot. With Arsenal on the verge of, reportedly, signing Real Madrid star Mezut Ozil and Spurs signing seven quality players in this window – this will prove to be a tough task. What Liverpool proved yesterday was that they are not pushovers this season and will try to push the clubs that finished above them last season all the way this season. It promises to be a fascinating year in the Premier League and Liverpool fans should enjoy being on top of the Premier League for the next two weeks!
