We’re singing give us a goal | Swansea

Swansea City’s start to the season reads as follows: Played four, Drawn two, Lost two Won none, Scored none.

The last statistic is the one that is worrying football fans in South Wales the most, Swansea again had dominant periods in the game against Arsenal but failed to convert any of the opportunities they created into goals. The Swans had 12 shots over the 95 minutes played by Stuart Atwell but only managed to get 2 of these on target.

It looked ominous in the opening minute when a defensive mix up  presented the ball to Mikeal Arteta who instantly released Aaron Ramsey,  who should have at least tested Vorm in the Swansea goal. Swansea grew in to the game though and started passing well and appeared to frustrate the Arsenal fans and players alike, this culminated in a wild tackle from Theo Walcott who was lucky to receive only a yellow card for his indiscretion against the excellent Neil Taylor. Swansea then came so close to getting that all important opener, after some good play out wide Kemy Agustien  turned on to his right foot and delivered a teasing ball in to the penalty area. Danny Graham did well to get to the ball before Arsenals new giant defender Per Mertesacker and his shot produced an outstanding save from Szczesny. It looked like Swansea were going to get to half time still on terms  until a deflected shot from the ineffectual Walcott was gathered by Vorm, who looked to start another Swansea attack by quickly rolling the ball out, The ball struck the heels of Angel Rangel and the Dutchman could only watch as Andrey Arshavin struck the ball into the empty net from a tight angle.

Any fears that the boisterous travelling Swansea support may have had that their team would deflate and concede more goals in the fashion that they did at the Etihad in their opening game were quickly banished as the Welshmen started brightly and Scott Sinclair rattled the frame of the Arsenal goal with a well taken free kick just after the break. Swansea then dictated the play for much of the second half with Arsene Wenger’s men always looking dangerous on the break,  Van Persie had a curling effort which brushed the outside of the post and despite Swansea’s dominance they failed to create any more clear cut chances until late on when Szczesny flapped at a corner and the ball dropped to Danny Graham on the edge of the six yard box. The striker turned swiftly but was unable to keep his shot down and as he blazed the ball over cross bar the red side of north London breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Swansea need to keep faith with their brand of football because once they do break that Premier League duck I get the feeling that someone is going to be on the end of a footballing lesson similar to the one Arsenal were on the end of two weeks ago. Lets all hope its West Brom who get that lesson next week at the Liberty Stadium
