QPR: Have They Learned From Their Mistakes?

QPR’s lack of financial control was well documented when they were in the Premier League last time posting losses of £65.4m in May 2013. They spent a lot of money on the likes of Christopher Samba, Julio Cesar and Stephane M’Bia, all of whom played no part in their successful Championship campaign. The Londoners also have a huge wage bill which continued to be an issue last season with average Premier League players like Bobby Zamora picking up wages of £70,000 a week. The finances will continue to be an issue, but it would be a shock of QPR continued to sign players for big fees and big wages, especially if they aren’t of the quality needed to survive in the Premier League.

Their transfer business to date has been very interesting as they look set to wrap up two deals in the coming week. Rio Ferdinand looks like he will join on a free transfer, while Leroy Fer is edging closer to a move from Norwich for a fee of around £4.8m. Both would be on big wages, especially Ferdinand who will have been used to picking up £100,000+ while at Manchester United. It’s difficult to imagine that he will have taken a huge pay cut to join QPR. They have also agreed a fee for Ajax striker Kolbeinn Sigthórsson, who has scored 24 times in 59 games for the Dutch giants, he will add another goal threat to a side which struggled for goals in their last spell in the top flight.

Ferdinand is one of the greatest defenders of all time and although he has lost some of his pace, his experience will still be a huge asset to Harry Redknapp, who will be reunited with the defender he managed at West Ham. He only played 14 matches last season for Manchester United, but he will be eager to show that he still has the quality to play at the top level. Last season, he had a very impressive tackle success rate of 90%, a ground 50-50 success rate of 60% and an aerial 50-50 success rate of 54%. It will be intriguing to see how the veteran defender deals with plying his trade at the lower end of the Premier League as is so used to battling for trophies.

The other expected signing will cause more excitement within the fan base as Leroy Fer is an established Dutch international, who managed to score at this summer’s World Cup finals. He was easily the best Norwich player last season, and shone in a poor side, it’s clear he has the required quality to be a decent Premier League player. He scored 3 goals and managed to get 1 assist, but it was his overall game which was most impressive. His pass completion of 83.45% is very good considering he played in a side, which was relegated, while a tackle success rate of 77.92% from 77 tackles shows how useful he is when his side is out of possession. He could prove to be one of the signings of the summer, especially for such a low fee.

QPR should be better prepared for the top flight this time as they have a core of hard working English players, who won’t allow them to go straight back down. The likes of Rob Green, Danny Simpson, Richard Dunne, Joey Barton and Ferdinand are experienced Premier League players, who will lead the side. That is something they lacked in 2012/13. While they also have Charlie Austin, who will be eager to show his quality in the Premier League, after scoring so many goals in the second tier. They could also have genuine quality in Loic Remy, whose future is very much still in the air. The Londoners are certainly in a better position than the other two promoted clubs, but will there egos prove to be the problem yet again?
