Arsene Wenger has revealed that the prestige of playing in the Champions League is more rewarding than the financial gain it brings. The Gunners are set to face Besiktas in the qualifying rounds of the tournament, as they failed to finish in the automatic qualification places in the league last season.
Arsenal have signed former Barcelona and Chile forward Alexis Sanchez, and many expect a huge push for silverware this year.
“Financially it’s a big game, but we want to compete at the top and want to fight with Europe’s best.” said Wenger.
The Gooners are yet to win Europe’s elite competition, but having signed two world-class players in consecutive summers coupled with the emergence of Aaron Ramsey last season, confidence is growing at the Emirates.
However, with the spending of Chelsea and Man City this summer Arsenal will have to hold out with the squad they have and contain the injuries that have plagued them year on year. Wenger will also look for his team to improve on finishing fourth yet again, and show they are ready to fight for the Premier League title.
