Another Late show for Spurs as they edge past Hull City

It was Deja vu for Spurs as they came from behind for the second consecutive away match to grab all 3 points against a determined Hull City. It took a red card 6 minutes into the second half to kick start the performance which looked destined to end up like many of Spurs’ recent performances. Both teams named 6 changes with Tottenham reverting to a 4-4-2 formation with Soldado and Kane partnered up top. Hull City feature 3 ex-Tottenham players in Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Spurs Late Show

Hull took the lead after just 8 minutes when the Spurs defence failed to close their former team-mate Jake Livermore who drilled in from 20 yards. It could have been worse for Tottenham shortly after when Hugo Lloris came to their rescue, yet again, to pull off a low save followed by 2 further saves to keep Hull at bay who were causing the Spurs defence all sorts of problems, especially Brady and Robertson up against Dier who was cautioned for a cynical foul on Brady after 33 minutes.

Tottenham made a change at half time, replacing the yellow carded Dier for Vlad Chiriches who instantly got further forward and put Hull on the back foot with some delightful crosses into the Hull box. 6 minutes into the second half Gaston Ramirez appeared to kick out at Vertonghen following losing the ball. The Linesman flagged the Referees attention who sent the Hull man for an early bath, and for the second away game in a row Tottenham were up against 10 men, this time with 40 minutes left in the match.

Spurs made a tacticHull v Spurs Statsal change, replacing Moussa Dembele with Aaron Lennon who instantly created width for Tottenham and looked extremely dangerous running at young left back Robertson. Shortly after the change, a neat turn from Soldado resulted in a free-kick when Michael Dawson came from behind and brought the Spaniard down. Eriksen and Lamela lined up for the free-kick but it was Eriksen who took it. His free-kick rebounded off the woodwork and the goalkeepers face into the path of Harry Kane who made it 9 goals in 10 games for the young Englishman in all competitions. Shortly after, a low cross from

Despite having over 75% possession, Spurs could not find a way through the Hull defence for the winning goal, marshaled by ex-lilywhite Michael Dawson who was immense throughout. Spurs finally took the lead on 90 minutes when Eriksen took the ball into open space 20-yards from goal and struck the ball past the out-stretched McGregor into the bottom left-hand corner to secure Tottenham’s 2nd successive away win.

The performance was lacklustre from Tottenham who really lacked the cutting edge they once had with Luka Modric in the team who could create a chance out of nothing. Eriksen only really came to life shortly after the red card in the second half, in what was a poor first half with little passion displayed by any of the Spurs players. Spurs will be happy to get away from the KC Stadium will all 3 points, but in truth the win yet again papers over the many cracks that are clearly evident at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham were far too narrow in the first half, this left both Dier and Davies exposed and unable to exploit the space that was left by both Lamela and Eriksen tucking in. This was not working for Spurs and a change needed to be made to challenge Hull and exploit the space we had created. The change came too late for me when Lennon replaced Dembele on the hour mark, however this change should have been made at half-time. The impact was instant as Lennon was causing Robertson problems left, right and centre.

The Sky Sports man of the match, with a 92% pass completion, an assist and a goal to his name went to Christian Eriksen. However special mention has to go to Ryan Mason who yet again had another superb performance in Spurs colours and his passion and pride to wear the shirt eventually rubbed off on the other players.

Tottenham need a lot more of their players to show Mason’ passion, his pride and his want to do well and win games. Too many players look disinterested and and beaten before the game has run its course.

Next up in Barclays Premier League Tottenham host Everton at home in a match which they need to get their home teams back on side following 2 straight defeats. Both teams will be playing in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night, Tottenham being at home against Partizan and Everton away at Wolfsburg.
