In the summer Oriol Romeu was bought from Barcelona for a fee of £5m, with a buy back clause for Barcelona in case he does well.  The early signs of his Chelsea career suggest that he can excel in Chelsea’s midfield, composed on the ball, knows to spot a pass, tactically aware as a defensive midfielder, at the ripe age of 2o he is a hot prospect for Chelsea. After his assured first start against Wolves, John Obi Mikel might have to start worrying about his place as defensive midfielder in Chelsea’s three man midfield.
His passing ability as well as his composure on the ball gives him a shout of being in the first team, with a passing completion of 93%, completing 65 of 70 passes, he is most definitely a player who can flourish in a Chelsea team which is changing it’s style of play from direct to fluid, he can be a large piece in the Spanish revolution.  Romeu, Mata and Torres are three players who can directly influence the change in which Chelsea play, keeping the ball, playing the ball on the ground and getting in behind the defence, although the change in style of play will take some time to completely work, these players will have a huge part in influencing this new, attacking style of football.
As we can see from the chalkboard above, he is pretty comfortable anywhere in his own half, coming back to help the defence, being the first option for the defence to look to when they are looking to pass. He rarely goes in to the opposition’s half but that isn’t part of the job description, he’s there to screen the defence and spread the play from deep. Mikel has been good this season however with a vital mistake against Liverpool leading to their first goal his first team starting place has come under threat, especially considering the amazing amount of options Chelsea have in midfield at their disposal. The way that Josh McEachran, who was promised first team football this season, has hardly started a game is an indication of the strength in depth Chelsea have in the midfield area.
Romeu is a class midfielder, this is already apparent, like many Spanish footballers he has a good passing range and is a good footballer, not a typical defensive midfielder and is arguably a mix of Xavi and Busquets. Although Romeu is comfortable on the ball, he does need to cut out small errors within his game. Within the game against Wolves he conceded 4 fouls, as a young midfielder he has a lot of time therefore he can cut out these mistakes and can develop over the years. It is a credit to Romeu that he is on the fringe of the starting line up, ahead of McEachran and other young players and is starting to make a fantastic impression already.
