Should Manchester United sell Jonny Evans?

Throughout the years, a number of players who came through the Manchester United youth side have left the club for other Premier League sides and Evans could be the next to do so. After his suspension for spitting at Papiss Cisse last season, it seems that Louis van Gaal decided that the defender’s time at Old Trafford had finished. It’s unknown whether the incident had anything to do with the manager’s decision, but the Dutchman is a stickler for discipline and Evans only played once for his side after his suspension. The defender is still a very talented player, who would be a great signing for the majority of Premier League clubs.

Everton have been linked with a move for the defender in recent days. Last season, the Everton defence looked shaky for the first time in years, with neither Phil Jagielka or Sylvain Distin looking as formidable as they once did for the Toffees. The latter has now moved on to newly promoted Bournemouth and the need for a new defender was a pressing one. John Stones is a promising defender, but he sometimes looked vulnerable at the heart of the Everton backline. Evans would be a smart signing to replace Distin, offering experience, a winning mentality and at the age of 27, he still has a number of years still left at the top level.

However, Roberto Martinez has spoken out dispelling the rumours, but it is a move that makes sense and there could still be something to it in the coming weeks. Even if Everton are indeed not interested, there won’t be a shortage of interest in the centre-back with Arsenal also being linked this summer. Southampton are also a side looking for defensive reinforcements after losing the battle to sign Toby Alderweireld and Evans is a player they could yet look at as they attempt to secure themselves in the top seven.

Last season, Evans only made 14 appearances for Manchester United in the league, with a combination of injuries and his suspension for spitting. The Northern Ireland defender made his breakthrough over two loan spells at Sunderland and during that time he showed that he could be an excellent Premier League defender. He has showed that in spells at Old Trafford, but he never became a first team regular over a sustained period and that has stunted his ability to grow into the centre half he should have become.

The Northern Irish international is a modern day centre half, who is excellent with the ball at his feet and capable of starting attacks from the back. This is one of the main reasons that Evans will be an attractive option for many Premier League clubs. It is why the link with Everton made a lot of sense as they like to play a possession based style of play

Jonny Evans’s future is going to be an interesting story to follow in the coming weeks, especially as Van Gaal seems far from convinced by the Ulster-man. If the link with Everton was false, then it could have been planted by his agent or Manchester United which suggests that the defender will be available and he would make a great signing for many Premier League clubs.
