Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Should he come to England?

The Premier League is going to become interesting this summer after the television deal comes into effect. I’d expect a number of big names to come to the league, and they won’t be restricted to only the big sides in the division. Last summer showed that players with Champions League quality such as Georginio Wijnaldum and Dimitri Payet were willing to go to mid table clubs in order to ply their trade in England. This summer, one of the biggest names in football is going to be a free agent, and it will be interesting to see where he opts to move. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been one of the greatest players in Europe for the last decade, but he has never played in England.

At the age of 34, he is approaching the end of his career, but it would be stupid to write him off just yet. The Swede’s game has never relied on pace or raw strength, and his contribution this season reflects that he is still one of the best players on the continent. He has scored an incredible 27 goals and got 11 assists in Ligue 1 helping his side to clinch another league title. However, more impressive is his four goals and three assists in the Champions League, which shows that he can still compete with the best.

Ibrahimovic is a unique centre forward, as he has the ability to be a target man with his aerial presence and strength, but he also has the technical ability to score all types of goals. He dominates Ligue 1 defenders in the air, with an aerial duel success rate of 68.18%, but only two of his 27 league goals have come from headers. This is a surprising stat, yet it shows that Ibrahimovic doesn’t rely on his aerial presence, and is probably even better with his feet.

There are lots of teams that would be interested in the mercurial Swede, especially if he is available on a free transfer. Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool would all be possible destinations for him, while even the overachieving Leicester City may opt to try and sign the striker if they get Champions League football. The PSG forward brings proven world class ability, experience and a feel good factor to the squad. He also has an arrogance, which allows him to perform when it matters most. This is a quality that is lacking in a lot of English clubs, especially in European competitions.

The English media have always voiced doubts about Ibrahimovic’s ability when he has faced Premier League opposition in European football, but he has showed time and time again that he could dominate in the Premier League. His exceptional performance in the Champions League against Chelsea last week, coupled with his incredible solo performance against England, in which he scored four times show that he could be really successful in the Premier League. He would probably best suit Arsenal, who need a world class forward and will likely have Champions League football to tempt him. However, links to Manchester United and Liverpool are both intriguing as the Swede is a global superstar who could revive either club and get them back where they belong. The future of the PSG forward is going to be one of the hot topics of the next couple of months and it would be really good to see him play in the Premier League. Finally.
