Jose Mourinho to Sell Players, But Who?

Earlier this week a report surfaced that new Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, would be looking at clearing the deadwood and undertaking a much needed overhaul of the United squad.

We take a quick look at the players whose futures could be in doubt and who could be on their way out of Old Trafford.

mousales

Sam Johnstone

Playing time will be limited for the young keeper, and the emergence of Joel Pereira means we can afford to let him go. A Championship team will snap him up and he could go on to do a “Tom Heaton” and establish himself as a No.1 elsewhere.

Ashley Young

The time has come to end Young’s United career.  He will always be remembered for his performance in that 8-2 mauling of Arsenal. His Olympic quality diving aside, he has been the only decent crosser at the club. We try not to mention when LVG played him at centre forward???? Maybe a return to Watford could be on the cards?

Antonio Valencia

Valencia has proven himself inadequate in both defence and attack. A worse crosser of a ball I have yet to see. Not really a square peg in a round hole more of a triangular peg with no hole. The fact he has never learned English tells you a huge amount about his attitude. Valencia would suit a team like Everton or West Brom, anywhere away from Manchester!!

Phil Jones

Heralded as the modern Duncan Edwards when he arrived, more like Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards! Injury-prone and lack of fitness has ended what could have been a promising United career. Jones will find his level in the middle of the Premier League. Hopefully he never takes another corner in his life!!!

Guillermo Varela

Classed as a youngster even though he is 23, his lack of defensive ability will not sit well with Mourinho. Varela never really got the chance to prove himself on a consistent basis and Spain or Italy would be a better match for his playing style.

Tyler Blackett

United’s forgotten man – we may have to send out a search party to find his hideaway in Glasgow. He hardly featured for Celtic on loan last season and with better players ahead of him it would be best to try his luck elsewhere. Championship bound!!

Daley Blind

The Dutch utility man is rumoured to be one of the first out the door. Mourinho is unlikely to play him at centre-back, or in midfield, leaving him with limited starting opportunities. His close family connections to LVG will worry Mourinho who demands total loyalty. He is the Dutch national captain so finding him a club shouldn’t be hard.

Matteo Darmian

The Italian only joined United last summer from Torino, but having failed to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League is likely to be on his way. Maybe we could use him as part of any deal involving Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.

Marouane Fellaini

A panic buy post-Fergie and a player that splits opinion. Love him or hate him, “Groot” your time is up. Italian teams should be queuing up for his signature and if any serious bid is made we should snap their hands off!!!!!

Juan Mata

The Spaniard provides flashes of brilliance in a poor United team. Mata will be missed by many supporters (including me!) but with his history with Mourinho a move back to Spain seems likely. At least he wont spend time looking lost on the right wing.

Jesse Lingard

The scorer of the winner that bought the FA Cup back to Old Trafford. Lingard has emerged as a useful squad player with decent pace. He has failed to impress me and with the quality being brought in he will be relegated to nothing more than a fringe player. A move to a top 10 team like West Ham will see him get plenty of action.

Wayne Rooney

An argument could be made for keeping the captain and moving him deeper into midfield. It is my opinion that time is up on his United career. Not only has he asked for a transfer TWICE in his Old Trafford career but he looks off the pace and will surely decline over the next few years. With a big offer from China likely to be on the table it could be the right time to shed his huge wage. Plus Sir Bobby keeps his goal scoring record. Jose is a huge fan though so a Rooney departure is doubtful.

Will Keane

At 23 he is just not good enough. If he was he would have made more first team apperances. Keane has failed to impress, even when out on loan, and as he is out of contract in the summer. A free transfer beckons.

Nick Powell

Powell arrived as a talented teenager but injuries and attitude have prevented him from progressing. With his contract up in the summer the Championship is his likeliest destination.

Adnan Januzaj

I am really torn with this but with the expected summer signings Januzaj would struggle to get anywhere near the team. He needs a run of games to build up confidence and that is not going to be possible at United. He would do well for a club like Ajax or similar. United need to request a buy-back clause in any future deals just in case the youngster regains his confidence and goes on to fulfil his potential.

Hopefully the money men at United have learned from previous mistakes. Every player has a value and its important we don’t undersell players. Players like Rooney, Fellaini, and Mata are established international players who commanded huge fees when joining us. It would make sense to try and use these players in swap deals. Januzaj & Young for Mahrez anyone?

Who do you think we should let go and why?

I am 39, and after a varied career in marketing and media sales I have been diagnosed with a severe and ongoing neurological disorder. This has resulted in me going from fit & healthy to being practically bed bound. It has been quite hard to adapt but that’s life and you have to play the cards you are dealt.   Since I became ill I have had far too much time on my hands. In between vomiting constantly, hospital appointments, and generally feeling awful I have tried to keep myself as busy as I can. I started writing about my love for Man Utd and sharing my views. The positive reaction to some of my articles has genuinely surprised me and seems to be growing daily. I have recently been name dropped on some Man Utd YouTube Fan sites such as #fulltimedevils and #theunitedstand and some websites have asked me to submit my articles.   Now I’m certainly no journalist and my views are purely the views of an avid Man Utd fan since 1985. I was a decent footballer in my youth playing for Bedfordshire County and Luton Town Academy Level before moving to Cambridgeshire, but that certainly doesn't qualify me as an expert.. Usually people don't want to hear anything I have an opinion on!! Well that's what my wife and daughter tell me! (Lol). However it would seem people actually enjoy my ramblings.   I have decided to go by the moniker "Red In Bed" because due to my illness I have to be realistic and accept my future lies in bed (no pun intended!) People who read my articles say they are well written and contain interesting content but hey they could be blowing smoke up my behind. Thanks for taking the time to reading this and I would love your views on the article.   Regards,   Dave Poulton (Red In Bed)
