Paul Pogba – An Expensive Investment or an Expensive Mistake?

It didn’t take Jose Mourinho long enough to assemble a star squad at Manchester United during the transfer season this time around, and it looks like he’s in no mood to stop! Unlike the last couple of seasons, Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have already signed up for the Red Devils, and now Paul Pogba would just be the cherry on top.

Pogba has won four consecutive league titles in Turin and was part of the team that reached the Champions League final in 2015.

He was truly put to test last season as he had to prove he could be as good of a player despite the fact that he was without Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal. He did ultimately get through that. There has been a lot of hype surrounding this rumour and it’s not a mystery. Real Madrid, Barcelona and City have all considered signing Pogba nothing short of a significant achievement, and that will supremely benefit Manchester United, especially given the Reds are without Champions League football this year.

One can be understanding of the fact that United requires a major overhaul as far as the team is concerned, hence the big bucks. However, is Paul Pogba really worth £100m?

This exorbitant fee has shocked most – especially as United could probably target other players or even teams of players for that much money. For example, Blaise Matuidi or Nemanja Matic would be cheaper options and also, the Euros have not quite been wonderful for Pogba. With all the attention surrounding France, it could be anyone’s game, and unfortunately for Pogba, Griezmann has been the recipient of all accolades and rightfully so.
Pogba is touted as one of the best midfielders in world football, but he has not done anything extra-ordinary in the Euros.

Argumentatively, Sergio Aguero also has not exactly been the best player in Argentina, but that didn’t stop him from being a beast for City. On the other hand, it is true that the Red Devils have a greater need for a player like Pogba than any of their rivals for because of lack of investment in that particular area in preceding years.

If Manchester United are truly intent on splashing that much money, shouldn’t they try investing it in purchasing more talent, instead of spending it all on one player?

It drove everybody crazy when £85m was spent on Gareth Bale, and a lot of fans have strong opinions on this one as well. The world of football doesn’t lack for instances wherein big money players failed to live up to their price, and can the Red Devils really afford to take such a risk, when they should be more focused on creating a strong and fool-proof team?

This seems like the best example of karma as Manchester United did let the youngster infamously leave Old Trafford for a lot less than a million in compensation, and now they are offering him a record sum to have him play for the team.

Should they succeed in getting him for that amount, will it be worth it?
