Analysing 5 Possible Left-Backs That Could Be Signed by Liverpool

Ben Chilwell‘s deal to Liverpool was going to be a huge boost as Klopp has personally expressed admiration over the young player, and also Liverpool badly needs a good dependable left-back.

However, few reports state that the youngster is being offered a contract extension at Leicester City, and he would probably stay on, if that were to happen. Moreover, Liverpool have accepted a £6 million offer for Brad Smith from Bournemouth, so Moreno could now be the only recognised left-back in the squad for 2016/17.

Klopp would not want to go forward without solving this issue first, and so, here’s a look at the five possible left-backs that could fill the position at Liverpool:

1. Jordan Amavi – Aston Villa

Liverpool have been linked with Jordan Amavi, despite only having 12 appearances last season, owing to a ligament injury back in November.

Klopp has certain standards and expectations when it comes to his players, and Amavi’s profile fits exactly what Klopp is looking for. He was actually an instant hit at Villa Park, prior to his season-ending injury.

However, Villa have not been too happy with the news of Amavi allegedly leaving the club. They will do everything they can to retain Amavi as in the few games that he did play in, he proved to be a valuable asset that could be nurtured into something bigger.

Amavi is strong as an attacking left-back who is also very capable defensively. He would be a great signing for the Reds and also develop to his full potential under Klopp.

2. Ricardo Rodriguez – VfL Wolfsburg

When it comes to influential left-backs in Europe, few can compare to Ricardo Rodriguez. He is a very talented footballer, with a lethal left foot that can be deadly from set-pieces. Still just 23, the Swiss international is slated to make a move, following four years at the Volkswagen Arena.

It seems strange that none of the other big clubs are looking to acquire Rodriguez’s signature, and Liverpool would do well to make a move for him.

Rodriguez is still reliable enough in the defensive area, and would bring great quality in the attacking third at Anfield.

3. Jonas Hector – Cologne

Hector put up an impressive show at the Euro 2016 campaign with Germany, providing intelligent runs down the left flank, a good final ball and expert defensive qualities. In fact, he is similar to Nathaniel Clyne in his ability to produce solid performances week in, week out, and he would be a very good capture if Klopp decided to make a move for him.

However, Klopp has not shown much of an interest in Hector yet, but now he might rethink the whole situation and Hector would be ideal for the kind of team Klopp wants to build at Liverpool.

4. Toni Lato – Valencia

Lato has already been linked with a move to Anfield. However, given his age and lack of experience, Lato is not a player that will probably not immediately come into the first team.

Klopp always supports the youth though and so if he feels like the player has potential then he will play him undoubtedly. All this is just based on rumours so far, but Lato is certainly the type of player who Klopp will feel he can help blossom into a top player.

Although Lato plays with blinding pace and class going forward, it feels as though Liverpool should be targeting a left-back who is more experienced and proven, as there is really no scope to take risks at this point.

5. Aaron Cresswell – West Ham United

Aaron Cresswell may not be one of the most popular left-backs in the EPL, but he enjoyed an excellent 2015/16 season with West Ham, and was extremely unlucky not to make England’s Euro 2016 squad.

Unlike Lato, Cresswell is proven in the Premier League, which is a major advantage. The 26-year-old would provide good competition for Moreno, and unlike Hector or Rodriguez, he might not expect to be in the first team every week, thereby allowing better player rotation.

How willing West Ham would be to let go of Cresswell is not known; Liverpool would do well to quickly make a move for him as he will also need no time to settle down to the rigors of the EPL.
