Who will be this year’s Premier League Golden Boot winner?

Being the seasons’ most prolific goal scorer in the Premier League is an exceptional achievement, yet not a guarantee that your club has had a successful league season. Last years’ golden boot winner was Harry Kane and he can attest to this fact. The local lad contributed 28 of Tottenham Hotspur’s final tally, yet there was no trophy to hold aloft and after St. Totteringham’s Day, nothing for Spurs fans to be excited about. In fact, since the inception of the Premier League, the Golden Boot winner has only ever also been a Premier League winner on eight occasions. Yet despite this, there is a certain pride in being able to state that your club has the number one marksman among its ranks and this can offer great optimism for future title campaigns. Therefore, here is the shortlist for this season’s most likely recipient of the Golden Boot.

Who will win the Golden Boot this season

Sergio Aguero

The obvious choice following 2014-15 Golden Boot win, he’s looking to become only the 7th player to earn the award more than once. If you’re looking at the online betting here, you’ll find odds of 7/2 and that could be money in the bank with Man City’s recent managerial and player recruitment business. The only caveat being an injury record that saw the Argentine clock-up 2361 minutes of Premier League game time and 24 goals, compared to Kane’s 3363 minutes and 25 goals last season.

Harry Kane

Is he still exhausted from last season’s title challenge? Is he demoralized from England’s pitiful showing at EURO 2016? The answer to both of these questions is no. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has the managerial intellect and judgment to ensure that his star striker is in the right physical and mental shape to begin the season. Kane’s rational aim should be to become one of the few consistent 20+ goals per season strikers, but with teams using their new wealth to strengthen all round, Spurs might find the way to goal more difficult than last year.

Jamie Vardy

The perceived wisdom is that the Leicester story is finished, so close the book and move on to the usual teams being ever-present at the top of the league. Yet, it seems that The Foxes will continue to play the same brand of counter-attacking football with an injection of more pace in the form of Vardy’s new strike partner Ahmed Musa. Teams knew what to expect from Leicester and Vardy for most of last season and they couldn’t deal with it, so there’s nothing to suggest they’ll be able to cope this season either.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Someone who doesn’t lack confidence and from what Zlatan’s said you would think he’d already won the Golden Boot. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is unfairly seen as a defensive coach, but his teams have always scored plenty of goals and there’s no doubt the big Swede will get his fair share. The issues are that he’ll probably be part of a rotation with Rashford and Rooney, the English league is more competitive that the French league and he’s 34 years-old.

The Rest

Romelu Lukaku – With Ronald Koeman now in charge at Everton, expect to see an improved Lukaku, but much depends on the recruits Koeman can bring in to supply him.

Diego Costa – Will he score or will he start a fight? Probably both!

Anyone at Liverpool – Sturridge, Origi, Ings or Firmino; one of them needs to step-up and be the main man. With no European football and manager Jurgen Klopp starting his first full season, you feel Liverpool could do well and a top striker may arise. Sit down Mario.

Olivier Giroud – Just ask Arsenal fans, they’ll tell you, there’s no chance.

Callum Wilson – Think Bournemouth will do a Leicester?

Wayne Rooney – No.
